Mary Jahnke

Lieu de naissance : Herbert, Canada
Date de naissance : 9 juillet 1918

Date de décès : 26 janvier 2013

JAHNKE - Mary Louise Corothers, beloved wife of Elmer Jahnke, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 26th, 2013, at the Cypress Lodge Nursing Home in Maple Creek. Mary was born on July 9, 1918, on the farm 6 miles north of Herbert to Leo Monroe and Anna Sophia Swanson Corothers. She received all her education at Herbert School where she graduated at fifteen years of age. After teaching herself shorthand, she was hired by the Wiebe Agency as a steno for $10.00 a month. She then taught herself to type on a borrowed typewriter. She moved to Swift Current as an employee of International Harvester in the spring of 1937, and then transferred to Winnipeg where she worked until her marriage to Elmer on November 1, 1941, in Winnipeg. Mary and Elmer resided nearly 71 years at the ranch north of Morse. Throughout her years on the ranch, she kept books for Jahnke & Sons, Jahnke Bros., and Jahnke Ranches, to the penny! Mary loved working in her garden, canning, freezing and pickling enough to feed her family of seven and at least two hired men. She counted her quart packages of each vegetable to make sure she had enough put away for winter. She maintained clothing with hours of mending, darning, patching and ironing! Mary and Elmer loved spending time with their friends and neighbours playing pegboard, cards, cribbage, dancing, square dancing and traveling. They enjoyed trips to Australia, Spain, England, across the line and to Dad’s surprise, a Caribbean Cruise! More than anything mom loved music: to play her Heintzman piano by ear, listening to Bing Crosby, Pat Boone, Liberace and the Big Bands. Throughout it all Mary endeared herself with her sharp wit and colourful sense of humour. Mary is survived by her loving husband of 71 years, Elmer Jahnke; she was predeceased two months ago by her eldest son, Neil, but leaves to mourn his wife, (Marilyn), children, JJ (son, Wyatt), Shane (Natasha - children, Savannah and Colt), Don (Linda), sons, Mike, Matt (daughters, Hayli and Jordi), Brian (Joanne), sons, Kristopher, Kurtis, Craig (Patricia), children, Jarrod (Michelle - daughter, Katelyn), Amanda, Ben, Liz, MaryAnne (Doug), children, Evan and Kelly; and by many nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her parents, Leo (Dutch) and Annie; her big brothers, Donald Corothers (Lil), Floyd Corothers (Edna), Ethel Duncan (Bruce); a grandson, Ryan Montgomery; a great grandson, Brendan; as well as all of her brothers and sisters in-law: Olga (Herb Wiebe), Pete Jahnke (Sadie, Elizabeth), Helen (Vic Wiebe), Elizabeth Jahnke, Annie Jahnke, Ben Jahnke (Gudrun), Bruce Jahnke (Betty); and several nieces and nephews. Mary leaves many treasured memories for us all - most with a smile! The Funeral Service was held on Friday, February 1, 2013 at 2:00 pm from the Living Faith Fellowship Church, Herbert, SK. The pianist for the service was Sheila Braun with Dan Siebert leading the congregational songs, “In the Garden” and “Beyond the Sunset”. The eulogy was shared by granddaughter, Amanda Jahnke. Special music was brought by Dan Siebert singing, “How Great Thou Art”. The ushers in the church were Garry Francis and Dallas Toews. The Interment Service preceded the Funeral Service and was held at the Herbert Cemetery, Herbert, SK with the following grandsons serving as pallbearers, Shane Jahnke, Mike Jahnke, Matt Jahnke, Kristopher Jahnke, Kurtis Jahnke, Jarrod Jahnke, Ben Jahnke and Evan Montgomery. In memory of Mary Jahnke, donations made to the CNIB or to Charity of Choice would be appreciated by the family. Funeral arrangements were in care of Swift Current Funeral Home, Swift Current, SK.
