Dr. Clive S. Macdonald, age 79, passed away peacefully at his home Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013, after a lengthy 19 year battle with Carcinoid Syndrome, with his loving wife Theresa by his side. Born Jan. 25, 1934 in Kensington, PEI, Clive was the son of the late Norman and Goldie (Guignion) Macdonald. Clive was a devoted doctor for 51 years. He obtained his medical degree in 1960 from Dalhousie University. He practiced family medicine in Wolfville, Baddeck, New Waterford, and Glace Bay. He was well respected in the medical profession. Clive was a noted teenage athlete, having in one calendar year captained the Summerside High School basketball team, played right wing on a Maritime championship AAA midget hockey team and curled in a Canadian High School curling final. His love for sports continued as he was a known Yankees and Montreal Canadiens fan. Clive was ringside doctor for many years for various amateur boxing clubs and was honored by many of them. He was also a founding member of the Board of Directors of the New Waterford Coal Bowl Selection Committee. An Opera buff, he thought 'the music died' after the dispersal of The Mamas and the Papas. Clive was also an avid reader and along with his thirst for 'nature', completed most of the classics. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Having a profound love of nature, he knew all of the birds of Cape Breton by sight and sound. He knew two-thirds of the wildflowers and had a special interest in trees. He designed his property to attract nature and since 1972 has seen 100 different species there. Clive shared this knowledge with a multitude of friends and family who will always remember and love him for that. Clive was a life-time member of the Nova Scotia Bird Society, American Birding Association and worked closely with the Canadian Wildlife Federation. Together he and Theresa monitored the shore bird population at Lingan Beach for 23 years. They also recorded the loon status on 15 Cape Breton lakes for more than ten years.
Clive is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Theresa (Campbell); sister Ione Macdonald, Halifax; son, Steven (Lisa), Bible Hill; daughter Hilary (Mike), Halifax; grandchildren, Katie and Ruby Macdonald and Kelsey and Megan Ritter; extended PEI family, Marsha Schurman, Brent (Carol) Schurman, and Paul M. (Heather) Schurman. He is also survived by sisters and brothers-in-law and their families and will be remembered lovingly by all. Besides his parents, Clive was predeceased by his son Shaun and sister Lois Schurman.
There will be no visitation or funeral service by request. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford.
