It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. Mary peacefully passed away at Seaview Manor on Feb. 14, 2013, in her 97th year.
Mary was born on Feb. 27, 1916 in Glace Bay and was the daughter of the late Agnes and John Bennett.
She was a graduate of St. Joseph’s School of Nursing where her nickname ‘Benny’ came to be.
Her whole life revolved around her very large family and her memories and stories always came back to her days spent out on the Mira. She was a member of Knox Church, belonged to a Couples Club, a leader in the Scout Movement and bowled for many years in the ladies league.
With so much love and respect, she will be dearly missed by her children, Billy (Sharon), Mira; Kathleen Jerrott (Ritchie), Round Island; Nancy Kosick (Fred), Glace Bay; Johnny (Suzie), West Bay; Susan Hiscock (Fred), Colleen Shepherd (Whipper), both of Glace Bay; 15 grandchildren, Steven Shepherd (Marlene), Tracey Pierre (Johnny), Derek Shepherd, Kelly Fraser (Roy), Rob Jerrott (Susan), Michael (Mableann) Kosick, Shannon Kosick (Don), Kyle Shepherd (Lynnette), Scott Shepherd (Cindy), Mark Shepherd (Lori), Ryan, Nancy and Holly Hiscock, Randy (Jennifer) Shepherd, Amanda Shepherd (Jeff); 15 great-grandchildren, Shawnee Shepherd, Kendyl Shepherd (Ashley), Kaitlyn Jones (Curtis), Breton and Devon Pierre, Garrett MacInnis, Blake, Dylan and Myra Shepherd, Hannah and Maya Kosick, Emma and Adam Jerrott, Josie and Lyla Munroe; great-great-grandson, Cale Jones.
Mary was predeceased by her husband, Bill ‘Shep’; son, Laurie; daughter-in-law, Averill Shepherd; brothers, Alex, John; sister, Jean MacKeigan.
Visitation will be held Saturday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. in Knox United Church with Rev. John Finlayson officiating. A reception will immediately follow the funeral in the memorial room of Knox Church. Burial will take place in Black Brook Cemetery at a later date.
Heartfelt gratitude goes out to the staff of Seaview Manor, her home for the past 11 years.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Mary’s name to Seaview Manor or a charity of choice.
