85 passed away on Jan 24th, 2010. She was born in Harbour Grace S., Newfoundland, to the late Richard and Elsie George. Betty grew up in St. John's Newfoundland and graduated from Bishop Spencer College.
During WWII, the activated GA National Guard Artillery Unit from Cobb County was stationed on Signal Hill in St. John’s. Betty met Henry Edward Cantrell on a blind date and they soon became engaged. As soon as the war was over, Betty flew to Georgia and they were married on Sunday Oct 20th 1945 by Rev Autry in the Smyrna Baptist Parsonage. They were charter members of St. Jude’s Episcopal Church and very active in the Smyrna American Legion. They owned and operated Cantrell’s Upholstery Company, specializing in antique furniture. They did furniture for the GA Governor’s Mansion. In 1971, they purchased a farm in Ranger, GA. They were Charter Members of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Calhoun. Betty was a wonderful hostess, cook and homemaker. Always artistic, she loved to paint, sew, and make all kinds of crafts. She was well known for her many pairs of colorful shoes and matching handbags.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry E. Cantrell, Brother William George and nephew Boyd George. She will be greatly missed by her daughters and their husbands, Pat and Barry Smith of Cramerton, NC and Margaret and Greg Caudle of Canton, GA. She leaves four grandchildren, Heather Smith, Eric and Stephanie Smith, Austin and Allison Caudle, and Michael and Carrie Caudle, and five great grandchildren, Savannah and Connor Smith, Madeleine and Norah Caudle and Sydney Caudle. Survived by Sister-in-law Effie George and Betty George and Family in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland and special friend Hazel Perchard and Family.
The family will receive friends at Carmichael Funeral Home in Smyrna on Tuesday January 26 from 5 until 8. A reception will be held at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, 224 Trammell, Calhoun, GA at 11:00 am with the service following at 12 noon Wednesday January 27. Burial will be at Georgia Memorial Park Cemetery, Marietta GA.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to St. Timothy’s Church, 224 Trammell, Calhoun, GA 30701.
