It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father, husband, grandfather, great-grandfather Alfred ‘Alfie’ Nunn of Sydney Mines. Alfie passed away peacefully with family at his side at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Feb. 18, 2013.
He is survived by his best friend and loving wife, Marlene (MacDowell); his sons, Bruce (Bonnie), Brian (Donna), Kenneth (Sylvia), Alan (Donna) and only daughter, Karen (Sean) Parker. Alfie is also survived by his 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents, Stanley and Frances (Stratton) Nunn.
Alfie grew up in Sydney Mines, starting his career at Princess Colliery Mine at age 18 as a blacksmith and finished his career at the Cape Breton Development Corporation Coal Preparation Plant as a production foreman in 1990.
In addition to his devotion to his wife and family, Alfie enjoyed many hobbies and activities over his lifetime. As a boy he was a sea cadet then as a young man became a member of the Cape Breton Highlanders. He was coach of the Sydney Mines High School hockey team, treasurer of the Minor Hockey Association, refereed various levels of hockey, member of the Sydney Mines Volunteer Fire Department, where he held a position as engine captain and volunteered many hours at Holmestead Memorial Camp. He also enjoyed scuba diving, travelling and camping. Alfie loved to read. He especially enjoyed learning about Canadian war history. He always shared a good joke. We will miss his wonderful sense of humour and boisterous laugher. One of Alfie’s most memorable highlights was his cross-Canada camping trip with his bride reaching his goal of the Yukon. He enjoyed his summer vacations and spare time at the “cabin” with his family as well living many years of “the life” in retirement in New Campbellton. He was an adherent of Clyde Avenue United Baptist Church. Go Blackhawks Go!!
