Alexander 'Pi'kun' Poulette (Feather)

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Alexander ‘Pi’kun’ Poulette on Feb. 21, 2013.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Joseph and Susan (Denny) Poulette.
Pi’kun’s earliest musical influence was his brother, Jimmy David Poulette. Before each major performance, he would offer up a prayer to his brother and to his mother Susan for strength to get through the performance.
For 45 years, Pi’kun and Gutch Poulette, as Morningstar, entertained not only the Mi’kmaq community, but the public at large. He played with Lee Cremo for many years and the pair would swap stories on their way to the next gig. He was a sought after speaker and freely shared his experiences about the Indian Residential School.
His song “Forgiveness” earned Morningstar an East Coast Music Award and brought tremendous healing to all survivors of the residential school. Pi’kun played at countless benefits and freely gave of his time.
He was also a member of the Sante Mawiomi choir and was a special friend of the St. Anne’s Mission in Chapel Island, and Ste Anne de Beaupre in Quebec. He was also a carpenter by trade and was gifted in the art of making cabinets.
Pi’kun had a special love for the Mi’kmaq people and would frequently refer to them as “my people.”
Our loss is the loss of the entire Mikmaq community but it is heaven’s gain. We also believe he is jamming with Jimmy David Poulette, Tommy Bernard and Lee Cremo and the rest of heaven’s choir.
Pi’kun is survived by wife, Margaret (Johnson); daughter, Tracey (Kenny) Poulette, Sydney; stepsons, Kyle, Jonah and Terrance Gloade, all of Chapel Island; sisters, Elizabeth Sacobie, Fredericton, Evangeline (Richard) Landry, Amherst, Geraldine (Jack) Smith, Amherst; brother, Thomas George Poulette, Eskasoni; grandchildren, Susan Marianne, Jordyn Evangeline, Koby Alexander; several godchildren, nieces and nephews. Also survived by his first wife, Pauline Loft and her daughter, Jessica Thompson; in-laws, John D and Agnes Johnson; sisters-in-law, Donna Lameman, Darlene (Gally) Paul, Diane (Kenny) Basque, Lorena (John) Tracey, Trina (Terry) Denny and Lynn (Geoff) Boyce; brothers-in-law, Jr., Dwayne, Darrell (Amanda) and Claude Johnson, all of Chapel Island.
Pi’kun was a friend of Bill W. and will be greatly missed by his special friends, Richard ‘Gutch’ Poulette, Binchey Stevens, Loppy Herney and Gally Denny.
He was predeceased by sisters, Irene and Annie Marie (in infancy), brothers, James David and Alfred (in infancy), second wife, Deborah Stevens.
Visitation will begin after 7 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 24 at the Gabriel Centre, Eskasoni. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at Holy Family Church, Eskasoni, Rev. Martin MacDougall will officiate, interment in parish cemetery.
