John ‘Jim’ MacKinnon, 79, died Thursday, January 7, 2010, at Florida Hospital Oceanside, Hospice Care, Ormond Beach, FL.
John was born March 28, 1930, in Cambridge, Mass., to the late Daniel Archibald MacKinnon and Laura Powell. He was raised in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada by his grandparents, aunts, and uncles. John attended Boston College and played professional baseball with the Boston Red Sox. He then enlisted in the Army to fight in the Korean War.
John moved to Miami, FL, where he met his wife of 54yrs, Barbara Schilling MacKinnon, raised his family, and worked for Central Truck Lines. After retirement, he moved to Port Charlotte, FL, and the last 2 yrs., resided in Ormond Beach, FL.
John was predeceased by his aunts and uncles, his brother, Lauchie MacKinnon, sister, Mary Catherine ‘Tootsie’ MacKay, and his daughter Dana Lynn MacKinnon.
John is survived by his wife, Barbara MacKinnon; his children Laura (Art) Chappelka, Auburn, AL, Leslie Chadwick, Ormond Beach, FL, and John (Julie) MacKinnon, Hoschton, GA; five grandchildren, Arthur ‘Skipper’ Chappelka IV, Clinton, MS, Hannah Chadwick, Ormond Beach, FL, Chris Chappelka, Auburn, AL, Jaret and Haley MacKinnon, Hoschton, GA; sister, Effie Mae Campbell, Cape Breton, Canada; and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephew.
Final arrangements were handled by the National Cremation Society in Rockledge, FL.
