PHYLLIS EAGLE-BOADWAY

PHYLLIS EAGLE-BOADWAY

Eagle-Boadway, Phyllis Darlene (nee Eagle)
It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that the family of Phyllis – beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and close friend – announce her passing into the spirit world on Saturday, March 23, 2013 after a lengthy, valiant, and often difficult battle against renal failure in Regina, SK. Phyllis was born on February 1, 1947 on the Whitecap Dakota First Nation (formerly known as Moose Woods Indian Reservation). She had resided in Moose Jaw, SK for over 37 years.
Phyllis’ life journey proceeded down 2 separate paths, each representing a contrasting worldview. She was raised in the ancient Dakota tradition and, armed with sacred knowledge passed down orally through the millennia, Phyllis later entered, learned about, and embraced a second path; that of the Anglo-European tradition. Her life was lived with great dignity and purpose. She was always careful to balance and apply the knowledge she gained from each path in her respectful dealings with those she encountered on her journey. She instilled a respect for all human life, cultures, differences, and traditions in her children and grandchildren. It gave Phyllis great joy to share her sacred knowledge with her loved ones.
Professionally, Phyllis recently retired as Aboriginal Counsellor at SIAST Palliser Campus after nearly 20 years of dedicated service. She created, gathered, and cherished many fond memories of her fellow staff and students during this time. Again, she skillfully and wisely shared Dakota teachings when she felt it was the appropriate time to do so, and only with those who she felt were ready to receive them. Phyllis was eagerly anticipating the opportunity to share her wealth of knowledge in her new role as Elder for SIAST; a role which sadly she was able to fulfill only briefly, due to Creator’s call home.
She is survived by her loving husband of 40 years, Dennis Boadway; son Aaron Boadway (Janet Schaeffer) and Dickie Yuzicappi (Orenda); daughters Pamela Boadway (Bradley Shier) and Jennifer Eyolfson; granddaughter Julia Eyolfson; grandsons Jonathan Boadway and Dickie Yuzicappi, Jr; brother Percy Eagle; sisters Malvina Eagle and Louise St. Onge; adoptive brother Doug Peterson (Heather); adoptive sister Shelley Johannson (Leonard) and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, close friends, and professional associates.
She is predeceased by her father, Chief Archibald Eagle; her mother, Kathleen Eagle, adoptive father, Gilbert Peterson; adoptive mother, Iris Peterson; brother George Eagle; sisters Marion Pryor, Thelma Doxtator, Marjorie and Charlotte Eagle; and adoptive sister Candice Peterson.
Phyllis’ traditional Dakota service will include a wake at 4:00 PM on Thursday, March 28th followed by funeral and interment ceremonies at 2:00 PM on Friday, March 29th at her ancestral homeland. Services will be held at Whitecap Elementary School; all who knew Phyllis are welcome to attend. Those who wish to honour Phyllis’ memory may donate to the Kidney Foundation of Canada – Saskatchewan Branch 1-2217 Hanselman Court, Saskatoon, SK S7L 6A8 (1-888-664-8588).
Arrangements are entrusted to Acadia-McKague’s Funeral Centre 955-1600.
