PETERS- The family of Kenneth Raymond Peters, age 71, are sad to announce his passing at Cypress Regional Hospital on Friday, April 19th, 2013. Ken was born on September 13, 1941, in Swift Current, SK to David & Helena Peters (Rempel). Ken began a part time job at Canada Safeway at the age of 17, which would take him through a 42 year career, many of those years as Produce Manager. He worked hard and played hard. He married Nancy Schellenberg on September 17, 1983, at which time he adopted her son, Curtis. Much time was spent with Curtis picking bottles, riding bikes, making forts and flying kites. Ken & Nancy welcomed their only daughter, Cindy, in 1985, and from day one she was the apple of her daddy’s eye. Ken was ecstatic when Cindy moved back to Swift Current after her four years away at college. It was then that he would pick her up after work and go for coffee or spend hours doing picture puzzles together. Ken loved butchering pigs. Many happy weekends were spent with fun, food, family and fellowship while working hard to get the sausage made and those chops in the deep freeze. In 1990, Ken made a life-changing decision when he knelt at the altar one Sunday morning and asked Jesus to be his companion for life. He began to usher in church and remembers fondly being a part of the Greeter and Usher team at Eastside. He was baptized upon his confession of faith a few years later. One gift he discovered during this time was his voice. Could he hit those low notes! For 10 years, he sang bass with the group, “Glory Bound” and was part of three CD’s that were released through that group. He loved the traveling, music, excitement and food that these outings offered. He currently was the bass singer for “Hymns of Praise” at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church. He was also a groupie for “Country Strings” and was known to sit for six hours at a time while they performed. Ken retired on March 28, 2002, and was able to finally participate in some of the activities and hobbies that he had been previously unable to participate in due to work schedules. He maintained his bargain hunting skills by scouring the weekly flyers and then shopping every Thursday. He was always looking for a bargain! Ken loved gardening and was especially proud of his “Dinner Plate Dahlias”. He was also known to have grown sunflower stalks which were well over seven feet tall. He collected rainwater in his dozens of barrels and was very energy conscious while watering his garden. An event he looked forward to every year was the Windscape Kite Festival. He would pack his lunch, make a thermos of coffee and be at the site by 7:30 am to get ‘his’ parking spot for the two days. He loved the kites and spent many enjoyable hours watching them float through the sky. Ken was very close to his in-laws and had the privilege for the past few years of escorting his mother-in-law to dinner each Sunday at Riverview Village Estates. The bond and the conversations they shared were something Ken looked forward to each week. Ken was predeceased by his father, David; his mother, Helena; a sister, Helena; brothers-in law, Andy and Daryl; and by his father-in-law, Jake. Left to mourn his passing is his wife, Nancy; a son, Curtis; a daughter, Cindy (Pat) Denis; his sisters, Rosella (John) Braun, Susie Quinn; his mother-in law, Sue Schellenberg; and his best friend and companion, Missy.
The Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at 2:00 pm from the Eastside Church of God, Swift Current, SK with Pastor Kevin Snyder officiating.
