MATHIE- George Eugene: May 12, 1941 - April 20, 2013. George Matthie, age 71, passed away at the Cypress Regional Hospital after a long struggle with cancer. George is survived by Helene, his beloved wife of thirty-nine years; his son, Kelly and his daughter, Karen, both of Calgary; his son-in-law, Yvan St. Germain of Calgary; a grandson, Joshua St. Germain of Calgary; his sisters, Muriel Vickers and Phoebe (Raymond) Bunnell both of Swift Current; his nephews, Murray Bunnell of Calgary: Mark (LeAnne) Bunnell and grandnieces, Alexa and Eden of Calgary: Brent (Shayla) Vickers and grandnephew, Rylan of Swift Current; his niece, Brenda (Erna) Vickers of North Battleford; brothers-in-law, Roger Rondeau (Gisele), Denis Rondeau (Vivian), Robert Rondeau; sisters-in-law, Giselle Rondeau, Denise (Ron) Bourgeois, Louise (Lorne) Smith; numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his father, Eugene Matthie, in 1988; and his mother, Phoebe Matthie, in 2013. George was born on May 12, 1941, in North Battleford, SK and attended school in North Battleford and Swift Current. He was married in 1961, to Roberta Stewart, and they had two children, Kelly and Karen. George and Roberta were divorced and George married Helene Rondeau in June, 1974. George worked for various oil companies, in environmental restoration for the oil industry, for Great West Chrysler, and lastly for Modus Structures. George loved the outdoors as a fisherman, a golfer and as a keen photographer of natural scenery and gardens. Even while dealing with treatments for a serious illness, he continued to take his camera outdoors to capture natural beauty in Saskatoon and the Swift Current area. The family would like to express their deep gratitude to Dr. Byker, Dr. Franke, and the staff of Cypress Regional Hospital for their care and kindness throughout George’s illness. George will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his family and many friends for his kindness, humor and caring ways.
The Memorial Service was held on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at 2:00 pm from Christ the Redeemer Catholic Parish, Swift Current, SK, with Fr. Richard Jasiak, MSF officiating. The pianist for the service was Marlene Dolter with Gerald Braaten as soloist. The eulogy was shared by Phoebe Bunnell. Readers for the service were Ginny Mitchell and Phoebe Bunnell. The ushers in the church were John Gaudet and Bevan Clark. The Interment Service was held at Mount Pleasant Burial Park, Swift Current, SK.
