George Roland Barrass

Barrass, George Roland – 94, passed away April 30, 2013 at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, NS. Born on April 4, 1919 in Marysville NB, he was the eldest child and only son of the late Rev. Dr. Ernest and Ada (Cain) Barrass. Roland moved to Truro from Bear River, NS in 1929 with his family and finished his schooling here. He attended Success Business College in 1938 and worked for A.E. Hunt & Company in 1939. Before joining the Canadian Army in July 1940, Roland worked at Nelson Motors. During the years 1940 to 1945 Roland carried out the duties of District Audit Officer and then worked in the transit camp in Windsor as an accountant, attaining the rank of Quarter Master Sergeant. Following WWII, Roland began a career with Lewis Limited and held various positions there. At the same time he became an officer in the Canadian Army Reserves. In 1950 he joined Webster and Sons Limited, a building supply company headquartered in Montreal. He became the local manager in 1957 and built it into a very successful operation. Roland retired from Webster’s in 1984. He was an active member of First Baptist Church, Truro for all of his adult life. Roland is survived by his wife Barbara (Durkee) (Gray) Barrass; daughter Janet (Charles) Burnett, Brookfield; sons, Robert (Dorothy) Ottawa, James (Marcia Newman) Los Angeles, California. He is also survived by his sister, Shirley Allison, Belleville, ON; granddaughters, Kathy Burnett, Halifax, Christine and Andrea Barrass, Ottawa, Susan Barrass, Toronto; grandsons Jason and Julien Barrass, Los Angeles, California; great grandchildren Emma Burnett, Halifax, Jacqueline, Benjamin and Audrey Desnoyers, Ottawa. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his first wife and mother of his children, Avis (Murray) Barrass; stepmother, Katherine (Wilson) Barrass; sister, Dorothy Barrass; grandson, Brian Burnett. Roland is also survived by Barbara’s children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Many thanks to the VON for their many visits and their professional, friendly and efficient support. Visitation with the family will be from 2-4 pm on Saturday, May 4th at the Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St, Truro NS. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 5th, 2013 at 2 pm at First Baptist Church, 759 Prince St.,Truro, with Rev. Dr. Frank Guinta Jr. officiating. Reception to follow at the church with interment in the Bible Hill Cemetery following the reception. Family flowers only please. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church, the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) or to a charity of choice which will be greatly appreciated and are also available to be made at: www.ColchesterCommunity.com
