James Joseph, P. Eng. Finn

James Joseph, P. Eng. Finn

Date de décès : 11 mai 2013

Of St. John’s passed peacefully away at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital in the presence of his family following a brief illness on May 11, 2013 at the age of 70. Jim was born in St. John’s, the son of James and Provie Finn (Hutchings) and the brother of Gerald (deceased) and Betty. Jim was educated in St. John’s and spent his formative years under the tutelage of the Irish Christian Brothers at St. Bonaventure’s College. He went on to earn his civil engineering degree from Memorial University/Nova Scotia Technical College in 1964 and spent most of his career serving the citizens of St. John’s as a member, and ultimately the City Engineer and Director, of the City’s Engineering and Works Department. In his role as City Engineer, Jim inspired great loyalty and enjoyed great friendships amongst those with whom he worked throughout his long career. He was a man of the utmost integrity and always strove to do what was right. Jim is survived by a large circle of family and friends including his loving wife of 43 years, Lois (Barrett) and his two children: Richard (Janne) and Susan (Ken). He was also beloved granddad to two grandsons: Michael and Christopher Finn, both of Calgary, Alberta and the cherished “Uncle Jim” of Elizabeth Barrett-Nicholl (Dana) (Dieppe, N.B.) and Peter Barrett (Halifax, N.S.). Jim will be particularly missed by his sister Betty Westcott (Bill) and his sister-in-law Anne Barrett; as well as a large group of extended family and special friends. His passing is keenly felt by the closest of his lifelong friends including John Sinnott, Q.C., Professor George Casey (Ret.) and Davey Shortall as well as those with whom he delighted in sharing his “cabin” in Spaniard’s Bay, especially Lorne Moores (Anne), Lynn Palmer (Larry), Verda Russell (Doug) and Ruth Palmer. Jim’s family has a longstanding connection to Spaniard’s Bay, and it was one of his favourite places to summer with Lois and his children. The “cabin” in Spaniard’s Bay was a lifelong project for Jim and is imbued with his love for this province; it will stand as his greatest memorial. Jim’s family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to the medical professionals of St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital, especially Dr. Hiscock and the exceptional nursing staff of 7-West, whose care and compassion is second to none and allowed Jim to pass in peace and with dignity. Jim is resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home at 329 Freshwater Road, St. John’s. Visitation will take place between 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Monday, May 13 and Tuesday, May 14, 2013. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Patrick’s Church, Patrick Street, St. John’s on Wednesday, May 15 at 9:30 a.m., with interment to occur at a later date. The family has requested that no flowers be provided. Donations in Jim’s memory will be gratefully accepted and may be made to the Parkinson Society of Newfoundland & Labrador, or any other charity of one’s choice.
