Gordon Smith passed away peacefully at the Soldiers' Memorial Hospital in Middleton, Nova Scotia, on Friday, June 14, 2013 at the age of 91 years. He was born in Toronto to parents who were officers in the Salvation Army. Their services took them to Halifax where Gordon was schooled. After high school graduation, Gordon and his family moved to Montreal where Gordon worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway. He enlisted in the RCAF in 1943 and trained as a navigator. He married Shirley Mallette in 1944 and remained married to his beloved wife for 65 years until Shirley passed away in 2009. After the war he pursued a career in the insurance field. A. Gordon Smith and Associates Limited was founded and became specialized in Marine and Transportation insurance. A lifetime lover of music, Gordon was an enthusiastic and accomplished musician who played his trombone in numerous bands until just a few years ago. He was well known for his sense of humour that he brought to all occasions. Gordon is survived by his two sons, Darryl (Lorna) and Grant (Henriette). He will be missed by his grandchildren, Neil, Allison, Christopher (Marilyn) and Eliane (Louis¬-Philippe Nagy) and great grandchildren, Emma, Matthew and Avery-Thomas. He is uncle to Janet and Beverly Watson. Relatives and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life Reception to be held from 2-4 p.m. Friday, June 28, 2013 in the White Family Funeral Home, 100 Cornwallis Street, Kentville, Nova Scotia. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the doctors and nurses of Soldiers' Memorial Hospital and the incredible staff and volunteers of the Veterans' Affairs Canada Wing of the hospital who provided care for our father. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to Soldiers' Memorial Hospital Foundation - Veterans' Unit or the Salvation Army.
