Vernon Blake Wood - 94, formerly of Upper Church Street, Port Williams, passed away Sunday, July 14, 2013 in the Veteran’s Unit of Soldier’s Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in Sheffield Mills, he was a son of the late Avery and Alma (Whalen) Wood. He was a veteran of the Second World War. Following the war, he worked as a carpenter with M.A. Condon and V.C. Woodworth. He then worked with the Department of National Defense, from where he retired. He was a former member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Kings Branch No. 6, Kentville for over 50 years. Vernon was a hobby farmer and took great pleasure in his horses and cattle. He was also a devoted family man and enjoyed spending time at his cottages in Kingsport and Baxter’s Harbour. He is survived by a daughter, Sandra Jackson, Upper Church Street, Port Williams; a son, Kenneth (Gloria), Upper Church Street, Port Williams; a sister, Evelyn Sampson, Sydney, Cape Breton; five grandchildren, Valerie, Bruce and Ronnie Wood, Mark Jackson and Cindy Sim; four great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Grace Schofield; two sisters, Muriel Roscoe and Marion Underhill; a brother, Laurie. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, 2013 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 18, 2013, Reverend Thelma McLeod officiating. Burial took place in the Hillaton Cemetery, Kings County. A reception followed at the home of Sandra Jackson, 497 Upper Church Street, Port Williams, NS. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society or the charity of your choice. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of the Veteran’s Unit of Soldier’s Memorial Hospital, especially Dr. Grant Goodine for the excellent care given to Vernon.
