Passed away on July 26, 2013
Lucy Elaine Cheveldayoff (nee Kalmakoff) passed away Friday, July 26, 2013 at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon at the age of 79…. three days shy of her 80th birthday. She was surrounded by her devoted family and care givers. Lucy was born in the Blaine Lake area on July 29, 1933 to John and Tena Kalmakoff. Her father John passed away in 1975. Her mother Tena in 1992. Lucy was also predeceased by her husband Alex W. Cheveldayoff in 1987, as well as an older sister Anne in infancy. Tragically, her brother John Kalmakoff passed away Saturday, July 27, 2013. Lucy will be lovingly remembered by her two children; Ken Cheveldayoff (Trish) of Saskatoon and Kevin Cheveldayoff (Janet) of Winnipeg. She is also survived by her four grandchildren… the sunshine in her life; Carter, Chase, Paige and Alexi. Also surviving is her sister and best friend Marilyn Postnikoff , sister-in-laws Doreen Kalmakoff, Elizabeth Cheveldayoff, Jeanette Cheveldayoff, Marnie (Ken) McLean and several nieces and nephews. During her formative years, Lucy attended Gillies School and Blaine Lake High School. After graduation, she was an Elementary Study Supervisor at Skipton School from 1949-1950. She then attended Normal School… graduating in 1952. Lucy taught school for 11 and a-half years at Windsor Lake S.D., Gillies, Leask and Blaine Lake. She was committed to her profession, doing her part to provide structure and education to her students and helping to develop them into mature, productive adults. On April 24, 1959, Lucy married the love of her life, Alex W. Cheveldayoff. After the arrival of their two sons, Lucy retired from teaching but still remained very active in the community. She served as a Blaine Lake School Board Trustee from 1968-1979. Together, Lucy and Alex spent many hours attending the boy’s school events and sporting events. They could always be found at the hockey rink or the football field cheering on their boys. In 1980, Lucy became the librarian in Blaine Lake. She loved books and she read with a passion. The library was a perfect fit. She enjoyed story time and making crafts with the children. After Alex passed away, the library became her home away from home. Though it was difficult without Alex, she remained very strong and valued her independence. Even through adversity, Lucy had an amazing ability to cope with changing situations. After 19 years at the library, Lucy retired in 1999. Lucy also believed in life-long learning. She obtained her Bachelor of Education Degree in 1994. Ten years later she obtained her second degree, a Bachelor of Arts Degree. In addition to her studies, she loved time with her two sons and their families. She also loved to travel. Hawaii was a favourite destination. Being the social butterfly she was, she made many new friends through travel. She also enjoyed many years with her friend and companion Ben Dyck before his passing in December 2009. Lucy was a true friend to all who chose to know her and she possessed a strong set of values and beliefs. She enjoyed what she called “The finer things in life”… beautiful sunsets, the gold finches in her backyard, the flowers in her garden, going out to the family farm, harvest time and her biggest joy… talking to her grandchildren and watching them mature each day. In 2005, Lucy was very honoured to receive the Saskatchewan Centennial Medal for her community work and her commitment to life-long learning. In recent years, Lucy resided at the Oasis Private Care Home in Speers, Saskatchewan. She appreciated the staff and the excellent care she received and enjoyed the various daily activities and outings with all the residents. The funeral service for Lucy will be held at the Saskatoon Funeral Home on Thursday, August 1, 2013. A viewing will be held at 9a.m. followed by the service at 10a.m., officiated by Bill Kalmakoff. A luncheon will follow at the Willows Golf and Country, Club, Saskatoon. A burial service will be held at the Haralowka Cemetery, west of Blaine Lake at 3p.m., followed by refreshments at the Blaine Lake Senior’s Centre.
