At 92 years
Passed away peacefully at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital on August 26, 2013 at 10:05 p.m. surrounded by her loving family. Eva one of “The Dalton Girls” was born on July 20, 1921, and grew up in beautiful Gooseberry Cove, Placentia Bay, the crown jewel of the Cape Shore. At an early age she showed determination and persistence walking to school and obtaining her Grade 11 with honours in 1937. She was a Trailblazer, a woman before her time. Eva was the Owner and Operator of Coffey’s Country Club and Eva’s Store and Gas Bar. Her strong work ethic and unyielding integrity formed the foundation for her business practices. Although, raising a large family and running a business was challenging enough it didn’t deter Eva from becoming involved in responding to the needs of the community. Eva was tireless in her efforts to help others and generously shared her time and talents. She was a dedicated volunteer and participated in many initiatives including, the Cape Shore Redevelopment Association, Crime Prevention Committee, Community Recreation Committee, Cape St. Mary’s Ecological Reserve Committee, and the Board of Director’s, Meadow Brook Seniors’ Complex. She funded and organized Santa Claus parades and was an active supporter of local high school graduations. Eva was a strong supporter of strengthening communities and as an icon on the Cape Shore was respected and admired for her community leadership and activism. In recognition of her accomplishments she was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal this past year. With her non-judgemental nature she formed close relationships with youth and became a source of encouragement, loyal friend and trusted confidante to many. For all her wisdom and kindness she will always be most fondly remembered by her family for her delicious bakeapple tarts and for being the absolute best breadmaker. Eva was a classy lady with a playful and fun spirit who believed in being active and staying fit. She loved music and in her later years loved going for her drive and welcoming visitors to her home. Predeceased by her parents: Esther (nee McGrath) and Richard Dalton; father of her children Dave Coffey; her long time friend Maurice Coffey; her son Richard (infant) and her beloved and cherished son Leo; sisters: Ida Coffey and Mary Tremblay. With sad hearts and cherished wonderful memories she leaves to mourn her family, Doreen Tobin (Johnny), David (Florence), Mary Coffey (Jim), Ellen Lake (Bernard), Ruby Manning (Keith), and Fabian (Kay); many extended family members and friends including Kevin English, caregivers: Anne, Diane and Kay, and her long time friend, Mrs. Helen McGrath. Eva adored her 19 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren and a multitude of other children who crossed her path, sharing in their activities and encouraging them in the pursuit of their goals. Sincere gratitude is extended to the medical and nursing teams at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital, 6 West for their compassionate and expert care. Visitation to take place at her home in Angel's Cove, on Wednesday, August 28, 2013 after 3 p.m. Funeral mass to take place at St. Patrick’s Church, Patrick’s Cove on Friday, August 30, 2013 at 2 p.m., with interment to follow in the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Patrick’s Cove.
