ANTIGONISH – Margaret Helen (Roach) George, of Antigonish, formerly of Windsor, Ontario passed away, September 9, 2013 at Mount Cameron, Antigonish, Nova Scotia.
Margaret was the daughter of the late Hon. Wilfred D. Roach and Gertude (Heck) Roach.
Margaret George was a professional artist, winning multiple awards for her art. She became interested in art in high school. She went to the Ontario College of Art for three years and studied at the Arts Students League of New York. She was married to Dr. James Alexander George (1923-2000) on December 30, 1950 in Toronto, Ontario. In the summer of 1961 she and Alec moved with eight young children to their home on Mount Cameron, Antigonish Nova Scotia, with one more child born in Antigonish in 1963. She and Alec co-developed the summer fine arts program, known as “Silver Glen Art Holiday’s” which won Entrepreneurial Award of the year from Nova Scotia Tourism and received recognition as one of the “top ten” vacations in Canada. She painted daily in her beautiful art studio overlooking Antigonish Harbour. Taking inspiration from the people and natural beauty of the Nova Scotia landscape. Margaret enjoyed gardening, traveling, swimming and spending quality time with family, friends and art colleagues.
She is survived by her nine loving children: Stephen (Lisa), Seattle, Wa; Margaret Paulino, NY; Danny (Amy), Schaumburg, IL; Mark (Cindi) Vancouver, BC; James Alexander II (Jill), Oconomowoc, WI; Jannine Howell, New Glasgow, NS; Mary Laccona, Sydney, Au; Michael (MaryKay), Perrysburg, OH; Justin, Antigonish, NS; 29 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her loving husband James Alexander George, MD., (January 23, 1923 – November 1, 2000); predeceased grandchildren Margaret (3) and twins Michelle and Gabrielle (in infancy).
Visitation will be held at CL Curry Funeral Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish on Sunday from from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Ninian’s Cathedral on Monday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Donald MacGillivray presiding.
