Age 90, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on September 17, 2013 with his family beside him at the Eckstein Hospice Center in Scottsdale, Ariz. Born on July 24, 1923 in St. John’s to Francis DeSales Murphy and Bridget Dobbin Murphy, John was raised on Williams Street in the house built by his grandfather. He is survived by his loving wife Jean of 63 years; his children: Brenda (Glenn), Sean (Michelle) and Paul (Lynette); his grandchildren: Marilyn and John; his sisters: Catherine and Florence and numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, his brother Francis and his sister Marion. John was employed by Trans World Airlines for 40 years in Gander, New York and Phoenix. He was dedicated to his career and the highlight was coordinating the trips for TWA for Pope John Paul’s visits to the U.S. After his retirement he continued to be a “Goodwill Ambassador” for TWA and was president of the Arizona chapter of the TWA Seniors Club. He was an avid hockey player for half his life and was admired by his teammates and competitors for the way he played the game. His efforts were rewarded with his induction into the Newfoundland Amateur Hockey Hall of Fame in 1995. John and Jean travelled around the world but they really enjoyed their annual trip to Newfoundland each summer to visit with family and friends and enjoy the beautiful scenery and weather. John had a long list of lifetime friends and never forgot a name or a face of people he befriended. He was respected for being a true gentleman. He was a man of faith who believed in the goodness of people. The family wishes to extend its grateful appreciation for the staff of Hospice Eckstein Center and the home care staff for their exceptional care and support for John. A joyous funeral mass celebrated by Monsignor Tom Hever was held at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, Scottsdale, Ariz., on Saturday, September 21st. John will be interred in his beloved Newfoundland at a later date.
