HORNUNG, Viola Margaret: Vi Hornung passed away after a short illness on October 3, 2013. She will be sadly missed by her family and numerous friends. She is survived by daughters Nancy Fox (Larry) and Deborah Hapke (Albert) of Vanguard, Sask; grandchildren: Angela Hapke (Brad Lively), Patrick Fox, Daniel Fox, Carlina Hapke, Chris Hapke & Kendra Hapke; brother Tom Shelstad; sister Pearl Solanik; and special friend Lorne Ferguson. Vi was born on May 19, 1931 in Swift Current Saskatchewan to Pearl & Otto Shelstad. She attended school in Swift Current and then began her teaching career in 1950 as a study supervisor at Leonard School west of Leinan, Sk. This experience ignited her love of teaching, so she went on to Normal School in Moose Jaw to obtain her teaching certificate. In 1952, she moved to Vanguard, Saskatchewan to teach at the Vanguard Elementary School. There she met the first love of her life, Roy Anderson. Vi & Roy were married on July 5, 1955 on her parents’ 25th Wedding anniversary day in Swift Current. She took some time from her teaching career to raise her daughters then resumed classroom duties in 1965. After Roy’s death she continued to teach until her superannuation in 1989. Following her retirement, she moved B.C., remarried July 3, 1991 to Jim Hornung and resided in Summerland, Christina Lake, and Kelowna. She remained in Kelowna after Jim’s death. Vi was passionate about her teaching career, teaching mostly primary grades, and taking on leadership roles such as Resource Room teacher and Vice-Principal. Living & teaching within a smaller community allowed her to watch “her kids” following their paths through life. Her focus was always on her students, and she became a strong promoter of individualized programming for rural students. Vi was well respected by all who knew her She was an active community member, even in retirement, who gave freely of her time, knowledge and skills to organizations such as Legion Ladies Auxiliary and various community clubs. Vi greatly loved her family and valued the role of Mom and Grandmother. Distance did not stop her from sharing in her children & grandchildren’s lives. Maintaining the friendships she made, both old and new, were important to her. Often defined as a “lady”; she met all of life’s challenges armed with a positive attitude, dignity, strength, and great sense of humour. Celebration of her life will be held at Springfield Funeral Home, Kelowna, B.C. on Oct 7, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. Happy Hour Social to follow at ANAVETS Club, 250 Dougall Rd, Kelowna. Interment and life celebration will take place at a later date in Vanguard, Saskatchewan. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to BC Cancer Agency Centre for the Southern Interior, 399 Royal Avenue, Kelowna, BC V1Y 5L3.
