DYCK-Steven Henry Dyck went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, September 26, 2013, at the age of 54. A loving son, husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend leaves incredible memories to those whose lives he touched. Steve was born on September 23, 1959, in Vanguard, Saskatchewan and grew up in the village of Blumenort, which he always said was the best place in the world to grow up. Although hard to believe, he was somewhat quiet and shy as a child, but soon grew into the fun-loving, tenacious but soft-hearted man he was known as. His teenage years were filled with hockey at the Neville rink, along with chores at home to earn a tank of gas to keep his '65 baby blue Impala SS’ on the road for another weekend with his pals. After graduating from the Swift Current Comprehensive High School in 1977, Steve spent a winter in Williams's Lake, BC working in the sawmills. It was there during a youth event that Steve, in his words, “decided to follow Christ as Savior and Lord”. Although his decision wasn't a ticket to an easy life, it was the foundation for the man he became. Losing his father at the age of 23 and the responsibility of his family farm, cultivated his determined spirit and hard-working nature. It was at a sports day in Herbert, that a particular softball pitcher caught his eye and little did he know that she was to become the love of his life. Steve married Darlene Martens on July 1, 1984, and they moved into their new home on the farm. Developing their yard together and growing the family farm became a joint affair and though not always easy, that invested time and energy brought great satisfaction to them both. Steve was a farmer through and through that truly loved every aspect of farming. He often said he absolutely loved what he did and he could hardly wait to walk out the door each morning to get to work. He also often acknowledged God's blessings in his life for many things but especially relating to his farm. In 1990, their daughter Kelsey was born - he was thrilled to get a girl and their "date" nights started before she turned three! Two years later they welcomed a son, Carson, to complete their family and he was honored to pass on his middle name. Steve was so thrilled that both his children loved hockey like he did and the Wymark hockey days brought many treasured times and tons of laughs, usually at their expense! A family trip to Mexico in 2002, ignited his love for travel and his burden for those less fortunate. As his kids grew older, and it became clear they both shared his love of the land, he thoroughly enjoyed working with them, teaching them and sharing his passion of farming. His best days were when we were all on the field together. In May 2009, Steve was diagnosed with stage four kidney cancer. Through the ups and downs of his journey, he taught many of us how to live well despite difficult circumstances and find the positive in any situation. His example of strength, courage, optimism and the enduring twinkle in his eye will be admired and cherished forever. His last birthday card sums it all up. "Dad. You truly amaze me how hard you've fought throughout our 4 1/2 year journey. You're the toughest man I know. Thank you for working so hard in the past to give us the chance to someday work on a beautiful farm. You've taught me a lot about honesty, love, caring and how to have tons of friends. Thank you for everything you have done and will continue to do. I love you so much!" Timothy 4:7 "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith". Steven was predeceased by his grandparents, Isaac & Aganetha Dyck and Jacob & Katherina Peters; his sister, Debra in 1956; his father, Henry in 1983; his father-in-law, David Martens in 1976; and his mother-in-law, Hilda Martens in 2001. He will be especially missed and cherished by his best friend and love of his life of 29 years, Darlene; his precious children, Kelsey (Shayne) Grose and Carson. He is also survived by his mother, Sarah; his brothers, Milton (Janet) and their children, Cassandra, Kyla and Madisson: Russell (Dawna) and their children, Colton and Austin; his brother-in-law, Murray (Charlene) Martens and their children, Bryce, Dale (Shanelle) and Chelsea (Daniel); his sister-in-law, Debbie (Doug) Kammerer; Darlene's birth parents, Drago Mamic and Hilda Schulz; along with so very many other family and great friends. The Celebration of Life Service was held on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at 2:00 pm from the Trailview Alliance Church, Swift Current, SK with Pastor Alvin Buhler officiating.
