Blakesley, Kathleen Muriel (nee Pepper) succumbed to the effects of a massive stroke on Friday, November 1st, 2013 at the Valley Regional Hospital. Fondly known amongst family and friends as Kate, she was born on April 4th, 1933 in Leicester, England. Beloved daughter of Frank and Millicent Pepper and sister of Pauline, Kate is survived by her husband of 59 years, Peter Herrick Blakesley, and sons Martin (Carrie), Neil (Lenore, deceased), Timothy (Paula) and Simon (Janine). Kate loved and will be missed by her grandsons Adam (Amber), Connor (Nicki), Peter (Chelsea), Jonah, Matthew, Christopher and her great grandson Max. Kate and Pete recently moved to Berwick, Nova Scotia, from Deep River, Ontario, following time spent raising the family in other communities in Manitoba, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, Massachusetts, and England. Inspired by her maternal grandmother Elizabeth Neal, midwife in the Leicestershire village of Ratby, Kate trained and worked as a State Registered Nurse at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. Always a nurse in spirit, Kate chose ultimately to make her life’s work the starting and nurturing of our family. Kate was an avid gardener and a fabulous cook who enjoyed sewing and knitting for her children and grandchildren, and for those of friends. She loved to read and, in later years, thoroughly enjoyed working in book stores. Kate was comforted in her final days by a window ledge resplendent with photos of her beloved family members and flowers and cards from well-wishers. Set against a backdrop of brilliant fall color, these reflections of the love that she gave to so many affirm the high esteem in which she was held. Kate was an appreciative Canadian who took obvious pleasure from the crimson maple leaf brought to her by her sons, and held by her in her final hours. On Kate’s behalf, her family and friends extend heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Kentville’s Valley Regional Hospital. The warm and supportive care received from doctors, her fellow nurses and other staff, was exemplary. Our entire family is deeply grateful for the outpourings of unselfish help and support from caring friends and neighbours, and also, the frequent compassionate ministrations of the Reverent Ruby Carter. A gathering in celebration of Kate’s life will take place on a future date, to be announced.
