BRIAN WALTER BAKER

Brian Walter Baker, age 77, of Prince Albert, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, December 6, 2013. He was predeceased by his parents Ethel (Brown) and Ernest Baker; many loving aunts (10) who mothered Brian after his mother’s passing; his sister Sandra Coombs; his two daughters from his first marriage Darlene and an infant; and mother-in-law Genevieve Becker. Brian will be lovingly remembered by his life partner Debra Becker; father-in-law Clarence (Margaret) Becker; brother-in law Blair (Lori) Becker and their two children, Jordan and Emily. He is also survived by two sons from his first marriage Harmon and Brian Baker; special cousins in Brian’s life include: Marshall (Gail) Hawthorne, Sharon (Ted) Humphreys, Darryl Taylor, Rose Sayers, Lois Fowler, Bob (Lynne) Morrison, Cheryl Morrison, Audrey (Gary) Sherdahl, Anita (Ken) Regier, Jack Adrian, Denny Adrian, Judy Tidman, Harold Rye and Karen Kvale. Brian was born on September 26, 1936 and grew up in Saskatoon, attending Caswell Elementary School and Saskatoon Technical School. He joined the RCAF when he was 17, moving to eastern Canada where he completed his training. Later, he became a civilian aircraft maintenance engineer, working in various locations across Canada, including the high Arctic. Brian met Deb in 1974 when they were both working in Buffalo Narrows. From then on, their love and commitment to each other never wavered. In 1979, Deb and Brian moved from Inuvik, settling in Prince Albert, which became their home base while Brian continued to work in the aviation industry. Brian was highly respected by his “mates” in the industry, not only for his knowledge and ability to service aircraft under the most challenging conditions, but for his “joie de vivre” and camaraderie. Throughout his 30+ years in aviation, Brian made many lifelong friendships that stretched across Canada and beyond. When Brian retired, he became more involved in his community, volunteering his skills and time to many organizations. Brian had a strong passion for social justice, and his involvement with the Council of Canadians provided an opportunity to support important causes dear to his heart. His ability to reach out to people wherever he was, to engage them driving force of “Steak Night” at the Co-op, and an unofficial “Camp Director” every summer at the Ness Creek Music Festival, Brian loved to bring people together in fellowship and fun. Of all places, his and Deb’s home was his favorite location to entertain friends and family. Those who knew Brian were blessed and entertained to be in his company. Brian’s inquisitive nature and desire to learn new things were ever present. He was adept at solving puzzles, especially challenging ones, whether it was figuring out how to fix an engine or do a complex crossword. Brian was generous with his time often coming to the aid of family, friends and acquaintances. Brian was also a master story teller, and never disappointed his audience. His sense of timing and the way he could reel you in often resulted in the reward of seeing Brian’s eyes light up and hearing Brian’s hearty laugh, radiating a deep sense of pleasure for all. Deb and Brian shared a beautiful life together for 40 years. Brian will live forever in our hearts. We will miss him. Friends and family are invited to attend a Celebration of Brian’s Life on Saturday, December 14 at 1:30 pm at River Park Memorial Chapel. Donna Woloshyn will officiate. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of Wayne Timoffee, Funeral Director
