Viola “Vi” Merle Humphrey (Harvey) departed this life on December 26, 2013 after falling and breaking her arm and hip on December 20. Vi was born in Assiniboia to Lewis and Anne Harvey on June 9, 1921, a sister to Dorothy, Wilfred, Kenneth, Allan and Robert. She moved to Mossbank when she married Stanley Albert Humphrey on December 1, 1940. Stan joined the Army in 1942 and was stationed in Kingston until shipping out overseas, on the day after Dick’s 1st birthday. Vi returned to Assiniboia and worked in her Dad’s hardware store due to the shortage of help. Following the War they lived in Mossbank where Stan and his brother Ted ran a radio repair shop until Ted moved away. They then turned it into a hardware store, living upstairs over the store. Stan also did electrical work, wiring most of the farms in the area as power came to the area while Vi managed the store. Stan and Vi enjoyed fishing and camping with friends Bert and Dora McKenzie. After moving to Moose Jaw they joined the Moose Jaw Camping Club enjoying many weekend trips with them. They loved taking the grandchildren along. They also bowled and golfed and acquired many friends through these activities. Vi was a lifelong member of the Order of Eastern Star, having attained the position of Matron in the Assiniboia Chapter, and again in the Moose Jaw Chapter. She is predeceased by her husband Stan; sons Dick and Dennis, grandson Justin, parents Lewis and Anne Harvey, sister Dot, brothers Wilf, Ken, and Al, and several sisters and brothers-in-law. She is survived by her daughter Gwen (Lloyd) Kowalski; grandchildren: Michael (Davina) Kowalski, Kenneth Kowalski, and Kari Dawn (Darren) Wolitski; great-grandchildren: Steve (Chantel), Taylor, Carson (Mary Kate), Leah, Brandon, Trae, Chaze, Kelby, Samantha, and Taysha; great-great-grandchildren: Paisley, Dominick, and Bowen. The family would like to thank the staff at Moose Jaw Union Hospital for their kindness and caring. A Celebration of Vi’s life will be held at Central Lutheran Church, 27 Hochelaga St.W., on Tuesday December 31, 2013 at 1:30 pm. Reverend Bob Langdon will officiate.
