Broken hearted, we, John's family, announce his peaceful passing on Jan. 12, 2014, at the An Cala Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Bras d'Or, on Sept. 16, 1947. John was the son of the late Oscar and Agnes (MacDonald) Swan.
John had raced cars in his youth, and maintained an avid interest. A strong NDP supporter, and active in the movement with the ILA Marine Atlantic. John held the office of secretary. He continued his efforts in the office of secretary for Marine Atlantic Pensioners Society. His favourite activity was dancing and karaoke with Alice. He has "sailed the lakes" for a number of years before his permanent employment with Marine Atlantic. Until his retirement in 2007.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by a baby brother, Cletus, and a much loved stepson, Jason Swan (MacNeil).
John is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Alice (McNeil) and her children, Jordan, Jonathan, and Bryant Hynes. Siblings, all of Bras d'Or, Frances (Joseph) Howley, Sylvia (Earl) Cantwell, Freda Swann, also, niece Valerie Hussey, N.B. and brother, Barry Swan. John is also survived by daughter, Briar Swan, and several grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the An Cala Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Cremation has taken place. A visitation will be held on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., at the SW Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. Funeral mass to take place on Friday, Jan. 17, 2014 at 10 a.m., at St. Theresa's Church, Sydney, with Fr. Sandy MacNeil officiating. Interment to take place in St. Joseph's Church Cemetery, Bras d'Or, at a later date.
