Passed away peacefully in Madison Manor, Nanton, Alta., on Jan. 11, 2014, at the age of 89.
Born June 27, 1924 in Glace Bay, N.S.; he was the youngest son of Henry and Carrie (Peters) Howie of Port Caledonia.
He is survived by his daughters, Judith Orde (Carl) Nanton, Alta., Audrey Matheson (Angus) Fairview and his son, Murray Howie (Debbie) of Clayton Park, Halifax, N.S. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Lisa Orde Bake(Robert), Strathmore, Alta., Kevin Orde, Calgary, Alta., Michael Howie (Margo), Jack and Rachel of Dartmouth, Jeffery Howie (Kerry), Sarah and Ryan of Hammonds Plains, Alan Matheson, Halifax, N.S., Amber Matheson Crant (Jimmy), Phoebe and Sabrina of Kanata, Ont. He is also survived by his nephew, Morenz Howie and family, Glace Bay, and other nieces and nephews and relatives across Canada and the U.S. Cousins, Audrey (Ralph) Didriksen, Maine, USA, John Howie, Port Caledonia, and his brother-in-law, John Colson, Mississauga, Ont.
As well as his parents, Aulay was predeceased by his second wife Hazel Kerr Howie, and brothers, Tom, Ted, Alec, Bill and
Sgt. Murray Howie and Jack Murant, his only sister Lillian (Melvin) Matheson.
Aulay joined the RCAF during the Second World where he remained until his retirement in the early 1970s, then moved to Mississauga, Ont., where he worked in dispatch and fleet management at two oil companies retiring at age 65. After spending time in the hospital after a fall in Deccember 2010, he moved to Alberta to live with Judy and Carl in Jan. 2011. He moved into Madison Manor in June of that year where he resided until his passing.
Special thanks to the wonderful doctors and nurses at the Nanton Clinic, the South Calgary Hospital and the staff at Madison Manor in Nanton; where he spent his last years in their loving compassionate care.
Aulay will be laid to rest in the spring in his beloved Cape Breton. Notice of the date of interment will be published later.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Royal Canadian Legion in your area or the Bomber Command Museum of Canada, Nanton, Alta.
