Donald MacRury Donald MacRury

Lieu de naissance : Louisbourg

Lieu de décès : Sydney
Date de décès : 31 janvier 2014

On Friday, January 31, 2014, at the age of 86, and in the early hours of the morning, God called him home. It is with sadness and a deep sense of loss that we announce the peaceful passing of our Dad and Poppy, Donald John MacRury at Harbourstone Nursing Home.
Born in Louisbourg, Donald was the much-loved son and only child of the late James Malcolm and Jessie Mildred (Beaton) MacRury.
Donald began his working life as a seaman and was able to earn his First Mate’s papers. After marrying in 1955 and starting a family, he changed careers and entered the teaching profession. In 1960, he began his teaching career at Woodill Junior High, later moving to Sydney Academy, where he taught Math until his retirement at the age of 62. Never having lost his love of the sea, Dad occasionally worked summers as a ship’s officer travelling to regions as varied as the Caribbean and the Northwest Passage. A long-time member of Sydney Pentecostal Church, Dad helped out in various capacities from Sunday School teacher to church treasurer. He was also a member of the Gideons International in Canada for over twenty-five years, serving a term as Maritime Zone Leader. In his retirement, it was not uncommon for Dad to make spur of the moment trips, frequently visiting his grandchildren in Newfoundland. Retirement also provided Dad the opportunity to return to the sea, working with his cousin, Joseph (Dodi) Bagnell, at the inshore fishery.
Donald is survived by his three children; daughters, Shawna (Alex) Barter, Deer Lake, NL; Sharon MacRury (Alex Phillips), Marion Bridge; and son James (Minnie) MacRury, Sydney; five grandchildren, Donald, Shawn, and Robert MacRury; Ian and Caitlin Barter. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Hazel Watters, Bras d’Or.
Besides his parents, Donald was predeceased by his wife, Beulah Francis (Dyer) and a daughter, Donna Lee, in infancy; mother and father-in-law, Henry and Susan Mae (Decker) Dyer; sisters-in-law, Evelyn and Ruby; and brothers-in-law, George, Gordon, and Fred.
The family would like to extend sincere thanks to the staff and residents of Harbourstone Enhanced Care Nursing Home, Irish Cove Extension most recently, for their care and compassion during Dad’s stay there.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 5, 2014, from 2:30 - 4 p.m. and 7 - 8:30 p.m. at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney.
Funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 6, 2014, in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Ron Coole officiating.
Donations in Donald’s memory may be made to the Gideons International in Canada or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
Online condolences may be sent to our webpage at www.chantfuneralhome.com.
