March 17, 1934 - February 21, 2014 - Passed peacefully away in Roseau, the Commonwealth of Dominica, West Indies, on Friday, February 21, 2014, after a short period of illness, Brother Patrick Paul McNiven, C.F.C., in his 79th year. He was predeceased by his father, Harold, and mother, Blanche (Snow) and brothers, Val and Michael. Leaving to mourn his sisters, Helen, Paula (William Reese) and Barbara, brothers, David (Connie) Greg, and Gerald Anstey (Mary) and sisters-in-law, Betty and Elizabeth, and many other family members in Newfoundland, and special friends, Madge Phang and Luigi and Ricky Gasbarre, and the Congregation of Christian Brothers of which he was a member for 58 years. Brother Paul will be remembered fondly by his many friends in the Caribbean Islands of Antigua, Dominica, Grenada, and St. Kitts. Brother served twice as principal of St. Joseph's Academy in Antigua, and played a part in the education and formation of many young men on that Island. Brother Paul was a professional educator and gave lectures and workshops to teachers in all four Caribbean Islands mentioned above. He also served as principal of Vancouver College in Vancouver, B.C., and of Chaminade College School in Toronto, Ontario. He will be remembered as an excellent administrator. He was a dedicated Religious Brother and is undoubtedly receiving the reward promised "to those who instruct others unto justice." A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, February 27th in Roseau, Dominica with burial to follow in Roseau. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated for him in the Basilica of St. John the Baptist in St. John's on Friday, Feb. 28, 2014 at 9:30 am.
