Donald “Don” Alvin Halcro
1947 - 2014
HALCRO – Donald “Don” Alvin of Warman, SK passed away peacefully on April 30, 2014 in Saskatoon with his wife and children by his side. Don was born July 4, 1947 in Prince Albert, SK to Austin and Marjorie Halcro. He attended school in Gerrond, MacDowall and Prince Albert. Don met his sweetheart, Norma Jean Kernohan, while attending school in MacDowall and they were later married September 7, 1968. Growing up, more often than not, Don could be found outdoors. He spent many hours horseback riding, playing hockey on the pond and working on the family farm. Don was a natural athlete, excelling in numerous sports including hockey and softball. Later in life, he would often tell the story of annually coming home with five first place red ribbons from the local and district school sports days. In 1964, at the age of 17, Don started work at Saskatchewan Wheat Pool in the Livestock division. His 35-year career took him across the province from Prince Albert to Swift Current, North Battleford, Yorkton and Saskatoon. Don started in an entry-level position as a truck driver but his work ethic, knowledge of cattle and the market and his natural ability to connect with people saw him quickly rise to manage yard operations in multiple locations. Don loved going to work each and every day. Managing the stockyard was hard work but he thoroughly enjoyed every long hour. The only thing more important to him was his family. Don took great pride in caring for his home and yard. He could often be found on the working end of a shovel, pushing a lawn mower or pulling those annoying weeds. He enjoyed watching his garden grow every summer and gave extra special attention to his potato patch, carefully hilling each one “just right”. In his retirement years, Don spent time fishing and golfing, playing cards (especially Crib) and following the ever-changing Saskatchewan weather patterns. He often said, if not for his career in livestock, he would have been a meteorologist! Don and Jean enjoyed travelling within Canada and recently made trips south to Florida and Phoenix. Don’s proudest accomplishment was his family and often said that he couldn’t have asked for a better son and daughter. He enjoyed keeping tabs on the many activities of his six grandchildren, frequently sharing their pictures and stories at the local coffee shop. He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his family. Don is survived by his loving wife of forty-five years Norma Jean (Kernohan); his daughter Laura (Troy) King of Regina, SK; his son Dean (Lesley) Halcro of Calgary, AB; his six grandchildren Nolan, Sabrina and Logan King and Joshua, Gabriel and Kate Halcro; his brothers Doug (Sylvianne) Halcro, Leonard Halcro, Floyd (Lucy) Halcro, Carman Halcro, Bruce (Dori) Halcro; his sisters Audrey (Rick) Barber, Joan Barmby-Halcro; his sisters-in-law Margaret Kernohan-Roy (Ernie Roy) and Jackie Halcro; his mother-in-law Gladys Kernohan, and numerous nieces and nephews. Don was predeceased by his parents Austin and Marjorie Halcro; his brothers Ken, Leslie and Cyril Halcro; his sister Lila Halcro; his father-in-law Norman Kernohan, his sister-in-law Doris Halcro, and stillborn daughter Alice Jean Halcro. We would like to thank the staff who cared for Don at the Royal University Hospital, in particular those on the ICU, for their exceptional compassionate care and support. A Celebration of Don’s life will be held on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Gray’s Funeral Chapel, 575 – 28th Street West, Prince Albert, SK. Interment will be held at Prince Albert Memorial Gardens. In lieu of other tributes, memorial donations can be made to the Royal University Hospital Foundation, 103 Hospital Drive Saskatoon, SK S7N 0W8 or the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan, 279 – 3rd Avenue N., Saskatoon, SK S7K 2H8 or the Canadian Cancer Society, 54 – 11th Street East, Prince Albert, SK S6V 0Z9.
