BLAKNEY, MELINDA DORIS MAY - 1968-2014 - The death of Melinda Doris May Blakney, 45, of Florenceville-Bristol and formerly of Sackville, occurred at her home on Friday, May 16, 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Sackville, Melinda was a daughter of Madelyn "Jackie" (nee Cole) and the late Harley Smith. Mel was very active in her community. She was an avid contributor to the Multicultural Association of Carleton County (MACC) as well as the Mi'kmaq Native Friendship Center, Halifax. She loved doing arts and crafts and would often share her talents with others, including taking time to do them with local children. Mel was loved by everyone. She was a very special and loving wife, mother, daughter and sister, and was an auntie to everyone. Left to remember Melinda are her husband of 21 years, Lea Blakney of Florenceville-Bristol; a daughter, Brittany, Halifax; her mother, Madelyn "Jackie" Smith, Sackville; a brother, Darren Smith, Sackville; several very close aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and extended family and special friends. Mel was predeceased by her father.
Arrangements are under the care and supervision of Jones Funeral Home, 70 Bridge Street, Sackville (506-364-1300) from where a time of visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm on Monday, May 19, 2014. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, May 20, at 4:00 pm. Burial to follow in the Westcock Cemetery. Donations in memory of Melinda may be made to Ovarian Cancer Canada.
