TENGUM: Kenneth Norman age 91 years of Swift Current, SK passed away on May 5, 2014 at the Cypress Regional Hospital with family by his side. Kenneth was born on the family farm, NE 26-17-18 W3rd, SK, two miles from Fosterton, SK. He was the second youngest of five brothers and two sisters. Kenneth attended Sunday School and was a baptized and confirmed member of St. John's Lutheran Church. Until grade eight, he attended Scotia School, after which at 15 years, Kenneth became a full time farmer. He came from a closely-knit family within a closely-knit community. Throughout his life, he helped family, friends, and neighbors. Kenneth was "The Best Babysitter" for his nieces and nephews. He farmed for 60 years, from age 15 to age 75. Kenneth's hands were never idle - he loved to "tinker". Kenneth was very skilled at repairing machinery and welding. For two winters, in 1947 and 1948, he worked for a trucking firm in Vancouver, BC hauling building material. Kenneth was a gentle and kind man, a very patient teacher with a marvelous sense of humor. He was a very good role model - he lived by example and believed "Life Will Teach You". Kenneth enjoyed, in his younger days, playing ball with the Scotia School softball team, going to dances and sports days in local towns, attending picnics with family and neighbors. "Kenneth looked so forward to family coming." A dependable driver he had no accidents or tickets. In 1961, Kenneth and his Dad moved to Swift Current, SK to the Beverly Apartments. Slowly, he was beginning to lose his eyesight. Many appointments were made - nothing could be done. Kenneth relied on family and friends to drive. In 1969, he and his dad moved to 58 3rd Avenue N.E. to live next door to brother Albert and wife Phyllis. Kenneth looked after Ole until his passing in 1975. After Albert passed away in 1995, he purchased a house at 820 North Railway Street E. It was next door to the Brekken's - Kenneth knew the whole family. Coatedstring was set in place so he could commute from house to house. Phone calls were exchanged back and forth everyday at 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., unless he had company. On Kenneth's phone were preset phone numbers for different buttons. Sunday's were phone calls either made by family or to family. His door was always open to family, friends, and neighbors, if he knew who you were or you had phoned prior. Time had come to sell the land, then the house. In 2011, Kenneth moved in with his niece, with family and friends keeping in touch. Kenneth resided there until his passing. Surviving family members are: Harold Tengum of Cranbrook, BC, Dorothy Tengum of Cranbrook, BC; nieces and nephews: Lorrena Sletten of Swift Current, SK, Carole (Ed) Oakley of Cranbrook, BC, Sandra (Ed) Todoruk of Cranbrook, BC, Cheryll (Brian) Montour of Calgary, AB, Raymond (Debbi) Tengum of Cranbrook, BC, Christine (Aldon) Pocha of Cranbrook, BC, Jo-Anne (Robert) Jinjoe of Victoria, BC, Lorraine (Barry) Weir of Leduc, AB, Myrna (Dennis) Philipp of Great Falls, Montana, Eileen (Clyde) Lindell of Helena, Montana, Mel Moe of Billings, Montana; 21 great nieces and nephews; 22 great great nieces and nephews; four step great nieces and nephews; and six step great great nieces and nephews. Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents Ole and Tilda Tengum; brothers and sisters Albert (Phyllis) Tengum, Robert (Wilda) Tengum, Edith (Eddy) Kantrud, Edna (Melvin) Moe, Edwin Tengum and Gilbert Tengum (in infancy); and uncles Ove and Jacob Tengum. The Memorial Service was held at 11:00 a.m., Friday May 23, 2014 from St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Pastor Greg Kiel officiating. Arlie Neufeld was the organist and pianist. "How Great Thou Art" and "May the Lord Bless And Keep You" were sung by the congregation. Memories of "Uncle Ken" from his family, were shared. The processional hymn was "Little Drummer Boy" with "Black Velvet Band" as the recessional hymn. Ushers for the service were Richard Camphaug, Barry Cole, Ingvald Dokken, and Dorian Sondrol. Eugene Hunter was the urn bearer. The Interment service was held at St. John's Cemetery, Fosterton, SK.
