Date de décès : 5 juin 2014

Gertrude “Gertie” Andres, age 94, passed away on Thursday, June 5, 2014 at the Swift Current Care Centre, Swift Current, SK. Gertie is survived by her husband, Abe; a son, Arnold & Dorothy Andres, Swift Current, SK – Sherri & Deepak Budhrani (Jayesh, Jasmine) of Swift Current, SK, Michael & Becky Andres (Chaise, Kason) of Kamloops, BC, Gerald & Esther Andres (Ainsley) of Airdrie, AB, Karen & Matt Rousseaux (Alexa, Kyra, Asher) of Swift Current, SK: a son, James & Lorna Andres, McMahon, SK – Ken Andres of Swift Current, SK, Stan & Danielle Andres of Swift Current, SK; a brother, John (Helen) Olfert, Swift Current, SK; a sister, Lena (John) Sawatzky, Swift Current, SK; brother and sisters-in-law, (Mary) Olfert, Saskatoon, SK, (Mary) Andres, Eyebrow, SK, Bernie (Doris) Andres, Herbert, SK, Katherine Jahnke, Herbert, SK; and numerous nieces and nephews. Gertie was born on May 16, 1920, at McMahon, SK to Daniel & Helena Olfert. Mom lost her birth mother at the age of 6. As a large family, there was no extra money for toys, so Mom and Aunt Nettie were creative and made paper dolls and doll houses from Eaton’s catalogues and shoe boxes. By age 14, Mom’s step-mother had also passed away. That meant now Mom and her older sister, Mary, were responsible to care for the family. Mom’s attitude was that even though there was not an abundance of THINGS, they were a happy family, for which she thanked God. Mom attended Iris School until grade 8. She also attended Swift Current Bible School where she also learned important things outside of school books. She noticed a handsome gentleman, Abe Andres, and after a courtship they were married on June 30, 1942, at the Mennonite Brethren Church in Reinfeld, SK. Mom & Dad enjoyed each other’s companionship for almost 72 years! Arnold and James joined the family, and they all worked together to create the farm that is still in the family today. Mom always planted a vegetable garden and by fall, the pantry shelves were over-full with canned produce, for enjoyment in the winter months. When Mom & Dad moved to Swift Current, she still planted a large garden and Dad had the “privilege” of delivering the extra vegetables to anyone that could use them. Mom always said that she did not enjoy reading books…but she read many recipe books and she was a super good cook! Everything was made from scratch, and she developed and used this gift in her kitchen. Over the years, Mom & Dad hosted many missionaries, relatives and friends in their home. No one left the house hungry! Mom & Dad attended the Christian Fellowship Church in Rhineland, SK for almost 60 years. Their faith and dedication to God was evident in their everyday life. The last few years were difficult for Mom, due to memory loss, but Mom & Dad became quite a team! As Mom was a good reader, she would read the Bible, although she didn’t understand what she was reading…and Dad could understand the reading, but could not see well enough to read. Even with their difficulties, they continued with a faithful prayer life and relied on God for daily strength. The family sincerely thanks the many faithful visits so many of you have made at the Care Centre. Also thank you to Doctors and nurses in the hospital and the staff at the Care Centre for your compassion and care for our Mom. God Bless You All.

The Interment Service was held at the Christian Fellowship Church Cemetery with the following grandchildren serving as pallbearers, Sherri & Deepak Budhrani, Michael & Becky Andres, Gerald & Esther Andres, Karen & Matt Rousseaux, Ken Andres and Stan & Danielle Andres. In memory of Gertie Andres, donations made to the Gideons International would be appreciated by the family. Funeral arrangements were in care of Swift Current Funeral Home, Swift Current, SK.
