Sister Stella Doucet, in religion, Sr. Marie du St Carmel, f.j., passed away on Thursday June 19, 2014 at the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont UHC in Moncton, N.B., at the age of 83.
She was in the 62nd year of her religious profession. Born in Betsiamites, Que., she was the daughter of the late Edmond and Hedwidge (Blaney) Doucet.
Besides her religious family, she is survived by two sisters, Aline Labrie and Marie Blouin, of Charlesbourg, Que.; three brothers, Patrice and Gérard, of Baie Comeau, Que. and Arthur of Beauharnois, Que.; as well as several nephews and nieces.
She was predeceased by one sister, Denyse Mineau and one brother, Bernard.
Sister Stella spent her active life, first as a teacher in N.B. in Dalhousie and Charlo; then in N.S., more precisely in Arichat, N.S. She then returned to N.B. and from 1961 to 1968, she taught in Lakeburn, Grande Anse, Dalhousie, Barachois and Adamsville. She ended her teaching career in Chéticamp, N.S., in 1971, for a total of 18 years of teaching.
After her formation in business administration in Montreal, she served as Provincial bursar in Moncton. In 1992, she was accountant for the diocese of Yarmouth, N.S.
From 1995 to 2000, she worked in Montreal as the provincial bursar for the Religious Province of Latin America - Antilles. On her return to Moncton, she worked as assistant bursar and also was in charge of the employees at the Provincial House in Moncton.
In 2002, Sister Stella gave up her favourite hobbies because of her health problems, but she kept her responsibility over the employees and that of representative of the Congregation on the Diocesan Committee for Development and Peace.
In 2008, she spent several weeks in the infirmary, before being transferred to Canterbury Hall, in Riverview, with several of her Sisters.
In 2014, she was hospitalized after a fall, following which she suffered à heart attack and a kidney failure. She passed away peacefully on June 19, 2014.
Her remains will be resting at Frenette Funeral Centre, 88 Church St., Moncton (858-1900) on Monday, June 23 from 7 to 9 p.m., with prayer celebration at 7:30 p.m. and Tuesday from 9 a.m. at the Maison-mère-des-Religieuses Notre-Dame-du-Sacré Coeur, 125 King St. in Moncton (Godfrey Lane entrance) from where the funeral mass will be celebrated in their chapel on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at 10 a.m. Interment will be held at Our Lady of Calvary cemetery, Dieppe.
