LAWTON, Eleanor Mary, FTCL, LTCL, B. Mus.–Passed peacefully away at St. Clare’s on Monday, December 29, 2008 after a short illness, Eleanor Mary Lawton (retired music teacher), aged 88 years. Eleanor was predeceased by her parents Louis J. Lawton and Bride Lawton of Bell Island and her brothers: Keith Lawton and Father William K. Lawton. Leaving to mourn her brothers: Dr. Louis Lawton (Ethel), Dr. Robert Lawton (Josephine) and her sister Anna Lawton. Eleanor was the beloved aunt and great aunt of twenty-six nieces and nephews. Eleanor received her early education in music on Bell Island. She later received her Licentiate and Fellowship in Music from Trinity College, London, then spent several years in New York studying music at Julliard and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music. Eleanor returned to Newfoundland and made her career teaching music at St. Patrick’s Convent School in St. John’s. She will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by her family, students, her many private pupils and her friends and colleagues in the St. John’s music community. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road with visitation on Wednesday and Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, January 2, 2009 at 9:30 a.m. from Mary Queen of Peace Parish, Torbay Road. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
