It is with sadness of heart we regret to announce the passing away of our father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather, Cecil Finney, at the QEII Hospital Halifax, July 13, 2014.
Dad was a Canadian veteran, rank-signalman and served as a dispatch rider from 1941-1946. He worked as a coal miner, employed by Devco and other mines for 27 years, and was a long-time member of the Seventh Day Adventist church, North Sydney. Dad will always be remembered for his quick wit, spontaneous humour, his kindness, love, great spirit and amazing faith. He loved to be surrounded with happiness and he always tried to give that happiness to others. Dad took joy in giving nick names to his family and friends. He was greatly interested in the lives of his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and very proud of their accomplishments, big or small. He instilled in his family the value of an education, encouraging them to follow their dreams and to fulfill their goals. Dad enjoyed gardening and farming, tried his hand at raising chickens, cows and goats. Completed his own goal in receiving a diploma in refrigeration. He was amazed with new technology and loved to “surf the net” and “face time” on his IPAD and calling us on his cell phone. These are the moments we will miss.
Dad was the son of the late James Finney and Sarah Cross, both from England. Born in Sydney Mines, May 10, 1923 and married Eliza Edena Jessome, April 21, 1942. He resided in Long Island for 68 years before moving to Lower Sackville to live with his daughter and son-in-law, Sara and John MacLean. Together they raised eight children, Daniel Finney (Bernadette), Long Island, Janet Finney, Millville, Joan Soper, British Columbia, Saralene MacLean (John), Lower Sackville, Cecil Finney Jr. (Angie), Long Island, Mary Jackson (Kenneth), Long Island, Susan Gear (Brian), Alder Point, Stephen Finney (Carolyn), Long Island and “Special” family member, Lloyd Johnston, Millville who Dad always called Ginger/Red. Left to mourn beside his eight children and their spouses are 27 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren; sister-in–law, Muriel Jessome, Long Island; brother-in-law, Dody King, Sydney Mines and many nieces and nephews.
Dad was predeceased by his wife Eliza 'Edena' (Jessome) Finney; infant daughter, Cecilia Eliza Finney; his parents, James and Sarah Finney; brother, Frederick George Peddle and son-in-law, Frank Soper.
Cremation took place at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, Halifax. There will be no visitation or funeral services as Dad requested. Graveside committal service will be held at Brookside Cemetery, Sydney Mines on August 7th at 10 a.m., arranged through Fillmore & Whitman Funeral Home, Sydney Mines.
