­BAILEY’S BROOK – Adrianus Joseph Cornelis “Adrian” Verhagen, 57, Bailey’s Brook, passed away Tuesday, July 22, 2014 in the VG Site, QEII, Halifax, surrounded by his family, after a brief illness.
Born in River Bourgeois, he was a son of the late Adrianus Hendrikus and Johanna Cornelia (Van Biggerlaar) Verhagen.
Adrian was employed in forestry and operated a hobby sheep farm for many years. He was a member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Lismore. Adrian was an avid race fan, especially enjoyed his role as crew chief and mechanic for the “Verhagen No. 97 Team”, which raced at Riverside Speedway, Antigonish. Adrian was passionate about his gardens and looked forward each year to deer hunting season. Spending time with his family was Adrian’s greatest joy. He cherished the time he spent with “poppies right hand man”, Dylan doing projects. Adrian will be lovingly remembered by his family.
Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Jocelyn Verhagen; children: Julie Verhagen (Bryan Buchanan), New Glasgow; Rosie Verhagen (Shawn Kennedy), St. Paul’s; Adrian Verhagen, Bailey’s Brook; Andrew (Samantha) Verhagen, Hopewell; sister, Anne (Jim) McNeil, Lower Barney’s River; brothers, Marinus (Dorothy) Verhagen, Linacy; John Verhagen, Bailey’s Brook and his fiancée, Cathy Wilkinson; grandchildren: Dylan, Blake, Danica and Tristan; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Andrew in infancy and Peter.
The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Friday in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church with Father Colin MacKinnon presiding. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Donations may be made in Adrian’s memory to Canadian Cancer Society.
