Frank Verbieren, 91,of Glace Bay formerly of Kingston passed away, Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014, in Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney Site.
Born in 1922 in Belgium, he was the son of the late Mathias and Jeanne (Vercammen) Verbieren.
The family immigrated to Cape Breton in the early 1920s. After grade school in Glace Bay, Frank attended courses in woodworking and completed a Carpenters Apprenticeship. He left Glace Bay in 1941 to enroll in a Government sponsored war time emergency technical training program (WETP) at the Trenton car works, on completion he transferred to work at the Canada Car aircraft plant in Amherst, where he met and married Gertrude 'Trudy' Richard.
Frank soon joined the RCAF after world news indicated the German army had invaded his birth place during the Second World War. Following his release, after the war in 1946, he returned to Amherst where he resumed his trade in the construction industry. In 1949 he reenlisted back into the Air Force as a career. After serving in Canada and overseas, he retired in 1973 in Greenwood after 27 years with the rank of Warrant Officer. He resumed his joy of wood working by building houses, furniture and wood carving, he also enjoyed fishing and gardening.
Frank was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 98 Kingston.
He is survived by half-sister, Jean Toomey, Glace Bay; half-brother, Emile (Ella) Landru of Glace Bay and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife the former Gertrude 'Trudy' Richard, daughters, Narda Verbieren, Dr. Dianne Rochelle Verbieren, PHD, half-brothers, Edgar Landru and Charlie Landru; brother-in- law, Gerald Toomey and sister-in-law Glenda Landru.
Cremation has taken place. At Frank’s request there will be no memorial service or visitation.
In lieu of flowers, donation in memory may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
