Esther Koehn, age 86, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 3, 2014, at the Swift Current Care Centre. Esther was born on July 18, 1927, at Fosterton, SK, to Olga & Olaf Dahl, the youngest of 10 children. Esther grew up in the Fosterton District and attended the Scotia School. Esther then moved to Swift Current where she started her long career in the banking industry. It was at the bank where she worked that she met Henry Koehn. They went on a blind date and “the rest is history”. Esther & Henry were married on October 7, 1950, at the United Church in Swift Current by Rev. Bell. Esther was an avid scrabble player and we have many happy memories playing with her. What a tough player she was! In her later years, at the Swift Current Care Centre, she played many games of dice, and 10,000 with her sister-in-law, Inez Dahl, and niece, Elaine Dickie. We will miss those fun games and the beautiful smile she had when she always seemed to win the game! Esther also had a love of horses, especially new ones, and spent many hours with her nephew, Gordon Martens, on his ranch looking at baby colts. Esther was predeceased by her husband, Henry Koehn, on February 13, 2008; her parents, Olga & Olaf Dahl; her sisters, Clara (Boe), Goldie (Helgesen), Thelma (Tangen), Mabel (Stewart). Merle, Opal (Olson), and Oline (Burroughs); and by her brothers, Selmer and Herbert Dahl. She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Inez Dahl, Doris Dahl and Sharron Dahl; a brother-in-law, Bernard Helgesen; and numerous nieces and nephews. We will miss Esther’s great sense of humour and beautiful smile. Esther always declared her love for her friends, Heidi Laturnus and Inez Dahl, and was so blessed to have them in her life.
The Funeral Service was held on Thursday, August 7, 2014, at 2:00 pm from the St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Swift Current, SK with Greg Kiel officiating. The Private Interment Service was held at the Hillcrest Cemetery withRoy Dahl, Roger Dahl, Garth Dahl, Allan Dahl, Hugh Martens, and Leander Funk serving as pallbearers. In memory of Esther Koehn, donations made to the St. Olaf Lutheran Church or to the Swift Current Care Centre Auxillary would be appreciated by the family.
