Elizabeth Mae “Betty” Moore, age 81, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2014 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Center, Amherst.
Born July 1, 1933 in Upper Nappan, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, she was the eldest daughter of Donald and Merna (Read) Fraser.
Betty was a long time employee of Sobey’s in Amherst. Over the years she also worked various places including cooking for construction camps in New Brunswick and working at Waldale Ltd, Amherst.
Betty was a long time active member of the Pythian Sisters, Elizabeth Temple #6 and Past Grand Chief (1991-92). She received an award for her volunteer work with the Red Cross Blood Donor Clinics. She also received awards for her contributions to Cerebral Palsy through the making of many beautiful quilts. One of those awards from Cerebral Palsy read “with thanks and appreciation of her diligence and hard work.” These are traits that followed Betty throughout life.
Over the years, she has been a member of the United Church of Canada in Fenwick, Sussex and most recently, Lorneville and was honored with a Lifetime Membership with the United Church Women. In earlier years she was a CGIT leader and Sunday School Teacher.
In 2014 she was honored with a 40-year membership with the Royal Canadian Legion.
Betty is survived by her daughters Faye Porter (Kenneth Fowlie) of Cardinal, ON and Deanna (Alec) Bishop of Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON; her granddaughter, Raya Donkin of Amherst; sisters Jean (Rod) Miller of Amherst, Rev. Carolyn (Victor) MacLeod of St. Peter’s, NS; and brother Lloyd Fraser of Amherst; stepdaughters Patricia McGovern of Dartmouth, NS and Nowell (Rod) Kyle of Sussex, NB; stepson Bill (Janice) Moore of Edmonton, AB; several step grandchildren; and by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Betty enjoyed a large extended family.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Russell Porter in 1992 and her second husband, Cecil Moore in 2010; her daughter Julie Mae and sister Marilyn Conklin of Amherst, brothers Hugh Fraser, Delbert Fraser of Amherst and Donald Fraser of Hamilton, ON.
In keeping with Betty’ wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be a Celebration and Remembrance of Life at Furlong’s Funeral Home in Amherst on Friday, August 15th at 11:00 with reception to follow. Interment for family will follow at the Amherst Cemetery.
