HARLEY, DAVID MURRAY, Q.C. - 1931 - 2014 - David died suddenly and unexpectedly in the early hours of September 1st with his wife Birgit at his side, after suffering a stroke. He was active and in good spirits right up to the end of his life. David was devoted to family, and his death is deeply mourned by Birgit, son Robert (Erik), daughter Anne (Brian), grandchildren Eleanor and Geoffrey, his brother Roger, and extended family in Canada, England, and the USA. He was predeceased by his older brother Tim. David was born in Saint John, NB, and attended Rothesay Collegiate School. He completed B.A. and M.A. degrees in History at the University of Toronto (Trinity 5T2). A Rhodes Scholar from New Brunswick, he went on to study at Oxford (University College) where he earned a first-class B.A. in law (1955) and a B.C.L. (1956). After five years practising law in Saint John, David joined Toronto law firm Borden & Elliot (now Borden Ladner Gervais) in 1962, where he specialized in corporate law until his retirement in 2000. He was instrumental in creating the legal framework and new legislation required to establish the Central Depository for Securities and the paperless securities system in Canada. David’s integrity, outgoing nature, and enthusiasm endeared him to many. He loved sports and the outdoors. He played varsity rugby for the UofT and hockey for Oxford, captaining both teams. A lifelong student of history, he was a keen opera fan, tennis player, cross-country skier, and traveler. He spent many active weekends with family and friends at his hobby farm near Rice Lake.
A memorial service will be held at 1 PM on Friday September 26 at Christ Church Deer Park, 1570 Yonge Street at the northwest corner of Yonge and Heath in Toronto.
