George Francis Fraser George Francis Fraser

Lieu de décès : Lingan Road
Date de décès : 5 septembre 2014

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of George Francis Fraser of Lingan Road, formerly of Grand Lake Road, at the age of 68 on Sept. 5, 2014, following a four-year courageous battle with cancer. George passed peacefully in the New Waterford Hospital with his loving family by his side.
Employed as a security guard at Sydney Steel for 30 years, George also spent 42 years as a member of the Reserves in the Nova Scotia/Cape Breton Highlanders. He enrolled as a private in 1964 and served overseas in 1967/68, retiring as a captain in 2006.
During his military service, he was directly involved in the training of thousands of recruits, serving as the training officer for the Basic Military Training Program. Among the many satisfying accomplishments was the graduation of his three daughters from the Recruit Training Course. He took great pride in his military service as a Reservist, and besides his service as the training officer, he also enjoyed duties as a range safety officer and in later years, as the band officer for the Highlanders Pipes and Drums. He was also a longtime member of Branch 12 Legion in Sydney, past president of Dominion Steelworkers Mutual Society.
George was a very hard worker, willing to try his hand at any repair job around home or on his vehicles. He never hesitated to assist others in time of need. He was loved and respected by everyone and mentor to many. He also enjoyed outdoor activities including fishing and hunting.
George will be sadly missed by his wife of 44 years, Sandra (MacKenzie) Fraser, daughters, Noelle Fraser, Debi-Jean (Lloyd) DeCoste, Vanessa (Luke) Vaillancourt and his grandsons, George Decoste, Corey Decoste, Jack Vaillancourt and granddaughter Victoria Vaillancourt. He is also survived by his brothers, Dan (Arlene), Eugene (Jeannie), and his sisters, Ann Marie (Wayne) Roach and Christina (Kevin) Campbell, a special Aunt Virginia (Sis) Walzak of Halifax, sister-in-law Donna (late Bob) Fraser, brothers-in-law, Jr (Helen) MacKenzie, Rodger (Arlene) MacKenzie, many nephews, nieces and cousins including those living in St. Pierre et Miquelon.
Besides his parents, Dan and Eugenia (Meaney) Fraser, George was predeceased by his brother Robert (Bob) Fraser, and his in-laws, Fraser and Sadie MacKenzie.
Visitation for the late George Fraser will take place at S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home on Alexandra Street, Sydney from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 8, with the funeral service to be held in the funeral home chapel, with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating on Tuesday Sept. 9 at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit at CBRH, VON or Cancer Center.
Special thanks to Dr. Lange, VON, Palliative Care, and the nurses on second floor at the New Waterford Hospital.
Online condolences may be sent to our web page at www.chantfuneralhome.com.
