Leslie Buffett of Neil’s Harbour, passed away Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014, in Neil’s Harbour.
Born in Neil’s Harbour, he was the son of the late Luke and Suzanne (Warren) Buffett.
He is survived by sons, Wesley (Judy), Glace Bay, Kenneth (Gwenny), Neil’s Harbour; daughters, Patsy (Norman Boutilier), Neil’s Harbour, Cheryl (Terry Shea), Ingonish; brother, Jim, Hamilton, Ont.; sisters, Bertha Battiste, Dartmouth, Mary MacDonald, Port Hawkesbury; special friend Marty Rene, Ingonish; nine grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Effie MacKinnon, stepson, Archie, brothers Robert, Hector, Russell and sisters Martha, Trypena and Grace.
He enlisted in the army in 1943 and served in the Royal Canadian Medical Corp. He served on the high seas and aboard the hospital ship HMSS Lady Nelson. He made trips to Europe picking up the wounded to return to Canada. After the war he made eight trips with the war brides. He was discharged November, 1946 and worked as an orderly in Camp Hill Hospital, Halifax, retiring from the Buchanan Memorial Hospital, Neil’s Harbour in maintenance. He was the last surviving veteran of the Second World War in Neil’s Harbour.
He enjoyed his retirement growing the biggest vegetables possible and making things with his hands. His yard, flowers and garden were his pride and joy. Most people knew him as the ‘Peddler’, selling clothes and household items north of Smokey.Visitation for Mr. Buffett will take place on Wednesday at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with the funeral service taking place at 2 p.m. with Rev. Carolyn Sharp officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.
