Dorothy Rice, age 91, passed away on Friday, September 12, 2014, at the Pasqua Hospital, Regina, SK. Margaret Dorothy Murphy was born on March 23, 1923, to Tom & Clara Murphy of Neville, SK. She was born on the family farm and has lived there most of her life. Dorothy started her schooling at the Bell Creek Country School which was right across the road from their home. She later went to high school in Neville. Dorothy worked in Neville for a year, as she graduated from high school early, and then attended University in Saskatoon for one year. She left university and went on to Success Business College. This training enabled her to pursue a career being secretary/assistant for many different businesses. One of the businesses was Continental Construction, where she met Jim Rice. Dorothy and Jim were married on December 27, 1951, in Neville, SK. They first lived in Medicine Hat, AB, where Jim continued to work in the road construction industry. A year later, Dorothy convinced Jim they should move to her family farm in Neville. They built a house on the farm and have remained there until recent years. They farmed in the Neville district as well as operated a drag lining excavation business which took them to many community pastures, farms and ranches in South West Saskatchewan. Recently they moved to Swift Current. Due to a fall and broken leg, Dorothy has spent the last year and a half in the Palliser Regional Care Centre. Dorothy is survived by her husband of 63 years, Jim Rice; son, Tom Rice & wife Jody - grandson, Bryan & Pam Rice and great-grandsons, Taeghan Rice & Declan Rice; daughter, Barb Rice – grandson, Daniel Polloway , step-granddaughter, Sharla Smith, and step-great-grandson, Keithan Smith; nieces, Val Braaten, Marcia Stodalka and Abbey Prokop; and numerous great-nieces & nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents, Tom & Clara Murphy; sister, Marjorie Braaten; and nephews, Greg Braaten & Donald Braaten; and by step-grandson, Tyler Smith.
The Funeral Service was held on Thursday, September 18, 2014, at 2:00 pm from the First United Church, Swift Current, SK with Rev. Annette Taylor and Marvin Allen officiating. The pianist for the service was Joan Williamson. Musical selections sung by the congregation were “Spirit Open My Heart” and “Lord of the Dance”. The Anthem sung by the choir was “In the Garden”. The Private Family Interment Service was held at the Neville Cemetery, Neville, SK. In memory of Dorothy Rice, donations made to the Diabetes Association of Canada or to the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
