Frederick Isaac Thompson

September 9, 1916 to December 25, 2008 (92 years of age). Frederick Isaac Thompson passed away quietly on Christmas Day, at Tofield, Alberta. Fred was born and raised on the family farm near Dunstaffnage, P.E.I. While working in a Charlottetown pharmacy, Fred met his bride, Helen, who was studying at Prince of Wales College. Fred and Helen were married on August 25, 1939, and celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary earlier this year. Fred served in the Royal Canadian Army during the Second World War. He and family farmed near York, P.E.I., for the next seven years. In 1953, Fred returned to serve his country in the Royal Canadian Air Force. During that time he and his family lived at many locations across Canada. In 1966, at age 50, Fred retired from the services and settled with his family, in Edmonton. Fred worked for the Alberta Provincial Government until his retirement at age 65, at which time he and Helen moved to their magical acreage near Tofield. Fred loved gardening, reading, gardening, fishing, gardening, wood working and above all, gardening. He was a kind, patient and soft-spoken man. Fred loved his family and will be fondly remembered for the gentle guidance he always provided. Fred is survived by his loving wife Helen (Barwise); son, Peter Thompson (Karen (Valpy)) of Leduc County; and four daughters, Fredda Leiman (Len) of Edmonton, Barbara Webb (Ken) of Tofield, Judy Fairweather (Roy) of Tofield and Susan McLeod (Dean) of Tofield; and by 11 grandchildren, Angela, Derek, Jaren, Helen, Irma, Jason, Kaley, Bonnie, Travis, Jacob and Craig. Fred also loved his 15 great-grandchildren, Samuel, Benjamin, Lucas, Camryn, Ryanne, Devan, Brandon, Brooke, Dustin, Severen, Cody, Ryan, Taylor, Mikaela and Ryder. Fred was predeceased by his parents, Herbert and Viola Thompson; three sisters, Jean, Mildred, Lila; and three brothers, Irving, John and Lorne. Left to mourn his loss are two brothers, Wilfred Thompson (Eileen) and Hollis Thompson (Linda); and two sisters, Marion Auld (Walter), Bertha Brown (Robert). All reside in P.E.I., except Hollis who is from Toronto. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Frederick Isaac Thompson, will be held at Tofield United Church, on Sunday, January 4, 2009, at 3 p.m. The family wish to express a special thank you to the staff at the Long Term Care Facility in Tofield, for their exceptional and compassionate care.
