NEW GLASGOW – Muriel Winnifred Stroud, 94, New Glasgow, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2014 in the Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Unit, New Glasgow, surrounded by her family.
Born in Truro, she was a daughter of the late George Allan and Melina (Russell) Boomer. She received her primary education at Salmon River School and completed her grade eleven at Truro Academy. In later years, she took business and typing courses at Stellarton High School. Muriel was employed for several years as a teacher’s assistant during provincial exams at schools in Stellarton and New Glasgow. She was a member of Christ Anglican Church, Stellarton where she served in the choir for many years. She was secretary of the Rebekah Assembly of the Atlantic Provinces for 28 years. In retirement, she became President of the Rebekah Assembly of the Atlantic Provinces. Muriel was a past president of the International Secretaries Association and past vice-president of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Rebekah Association, Ottawa. She was a former member and the first female president of the Board of Trustees of The Odd Fellows Home, Pictou, where, during her tenure, she oversaw the transition of the former home to the current facility. Muriel served as Noble Grand of the former Southern Cross Rebekah Lodge, Stellarton where she was a member for over 55 years. She was a member of Dorcas Rebekah Lodge No. 42, Thorburn. She was a member of Jubilee Temple No. 5, Pythian Sisters for over 40 years and a past Supreme Representative of Grand Temple Pythian Sisters. In recognition of her life accomplishments, her history was published in the “Who’s Who of American Women.
Surviving are her son, Judge Robert (Helen) Stroud, Q.C., Stellarton; daughter, Vona (Art) Fleming, Trenton; grandsons, Tom (Susan) Stroud, Fall River; Mark (Angela) Stroud, Stellarton; Brian (Wendy) Stroud, Hammonds Plains; Darren (Olivia) Stroud, Stellarton; Gregory (Diane) Smith, Montreal, Que.; Shawn (Tina) Smith, St. John’s, N.L.; great-grandchildren, Robert, Anne Muriel, Abbey, Chloe, Brett, Morghen, Mason, Charlotte, Kate, Samuel, Brigitte, and twins, Aidan and Gabriel; many nieces, nephews and a large extended family; special friends, Carol MacCarron and Doreen Paris.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband of 73 years, William Robert “Bill” Stroud; sisters, Gertrude Bartlett, Dorothy Yuill and Freda Staples; brothers, Reginald, Fred, Leonard and Walter “Buddy”.
The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Christ Anglican Church, Stellarton with Archdeacon Peter Armstrong and Rev. Aidan Kingsbury officiating. Interment will be in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens.
