The family of Alta Nadine Stephenson Legros, age 91, sadly announce her passing on Monday, November 17, 2014. Alta was born on April 23, 1923, in New Cambria, Missouri, USA. She grew up on a farm at Hazenmore, SK where she attended Leicester SD for grades 1-11. She finished her high school at Hazenmore School. Alta went on to Moose Jaw Normal School and completed her education in 1941. She taught at various schools, in the three western provinces, beginning with Highway SD #4623 north of Cadillac, SK. In 1947, she married Frank Legros of Cadillac. They raised three children on the farm where Frank was raised. Both Alta & Frank were active in their children’s activities, taking on roles as leaders in their 4-H clubs. She passed on a quick wit and sense of humour to her children and grandchildren, making family get-togethers very entertaining. Alta’s interests were many and varied. She & Frank were avid square dancers, collected arrowheads and other native artifacts, made baskets, diamond willow canes, made polished rock jewelry, and knitted slippers. Alta crocheted, quilted, acted in community plays, mended clothes, and covered hangers. She was a member of the Cadillac Historical Society, the Cadillac History Book Club, the CWL, and the Cadillac 50-50 Club. She loved to be active in the community and did what she could to keep the community alive. The Village of Cadillac and documenting family and community history became a passion for Alta. Alta was predeceased by her husband, Frank Legros; her parents, Oscar & Anna Stephenson; her siblings, Payton (Marion) Stephenson, Marie (Tony Gruber) (Cliff) Bickner, Catherine (Wendell) Hamilton; great-grandsons, Avery and Donimique Carignan; in laws, Melanie & Camille Legros, Sidonie & Alphie Lacasse. The legacy left by Alta will be carried on through her children, grandchildren and families. Daughters, Linda (Maurice) Metke, their children: Blair (Erin: Machenzie, Alexandria, Elizabeth, Claire) Metke, Kerry (Troy: Nate, Zane) LaForge, Dacey (Jeff: Kadie, Mason) Mansiere, Joanne (Norman) Perron, their children: Melanie Perron, Monique (Jason: Zeke, Dane, Cole) Williams, Steven (Shanna Rushing: Niya, Tanika, Alyssa) Perron; Son, Wilf (Brenda) Legros, their children: Christa (Dave: Camille, Pierce) Kaytor, Melissa (Andre: Sophie, Zacharie, Bryn) Carignan, Chadd (Dallas: Jesse, Levi, Shaye) Legros, Holly (Chris: Stetson, Ty, Rhett) Franklin.
The Celebration of Life Service was held on Friday, November 21, 2014 at 2:00 pm from the Cadillac Community Hall, Cadillac, SK with Celebrant Eleanor Rockabar officiating. The eulogy was shared by Christa Kaytor and Holly Franklin. The ushers were Dave Dixon and Hassen Hattum. The Honorary Pallbearers were “All those who shared in Alta’s life”. The Interment Service was held at the Cadillac Cemetery, Cadillac, SK with Brenda Legros serving as Urn Bearer. In memory of Alta Legros, donations made to the Foyer St. Joseph Nursing Home or to the Dr. Noble Irwin Healthcare Foundation designated to the Ponteix Health Centre would be appreciated by the family.
