DOWNEY, EARL STANLEY - Earl Stanley Downey, of Hartland, formerly of Lower Brighton, passed away unexpectedly at the Upper River Valley Hospital in Waterville on Thursday, December 11, 2014. He lived most of his life in Lower Brighton until moving in April of 2014 to Carleton Place, the assisted living facility in Hartland. Earl was born in East Brighton on June 19, 1918, and was the son of the late James and Cora Downey. He enlisted and served in the Army during the war years. He worked for the Department of Transportation, plowing and doing road work. For many years he drove school bus, taking great pride in keeping his bus spotless. Earl was an avid gardener, maintaining a flourishing vegetable garden until moving to Carleton Place. He and his late wife, Mildred, were married for 69 years and lived in Lower Brighton until her death in January 2014. They were exceptional neighbors, loved having company, and you were always invited to have a meal. Earl loved playing his harmonica, guitar and keyboard, both at home and in his church. You were always treated to a song when you came to visit. Earl leaves behind his daughter, Irma Cowper Thompson and son-in-law, Larry Thompson of Quispamsis; grand daughters, Sherry (Steve) Cowper of Sussex, Susan (Vance) Crozier of Rothesay; three great-grandchildren, Kaeli Crozier, Samuel Cowper and Rachel Cowper; several nieces and nephews. Earl was predeceased by his wife, Mildred, where they are again united in their heavenly home with their Lord and Saviour. He was also predeceased by his son-in-law, Laurel Cowper, his brothers, Ray, Alvin and Lorne.
Resting at the Britton Funeral Home, 2 High Street, Hartland with visiting hours on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. from the Lower Brighton Wesleyan Church with Pastor Glen McVicar officiating. Interment will be in the Lower Brighton Cemetery. If so desired donations can be made to the Lower Brighton Wesleyan Church or a charity of the donor’s choice. www.brittonfh.ca
