It is with broken hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, wife, sister, grandmother and friend Arlene MacKinnon formerly of George Street, in Sydney on Dec. 22, 2014 at the Northside Guest Home.
Survived by her husband, John Wayne; son, Jason (Wanda O’Neil); two daughters, Shauna (Joe Yhard), Ontario and Noline Francis (Jordan); five grandchildren, Vonica, Jared, Justin, Kaley and Jaron; three sisters, Sandra Wainwright, Inez Hawco, Rose (Dale) Donald, B.C.; three brothers, Elmo (Ann), B.C., Errol, Sydney, Roger, Ontario.
Predeceased by her parents, Inez (Weatherbee) and James Elmo Hawco; her sister, Gloria Maglario and daughter, Angela 'Angie'.
Mom was affectionately known to many as the roadrunner due to her love of walking, spending time outside in nature, drives along the water and shopping. Arlene dedicated many years of her life to caring for others. First lovingly raising her four children then babysitting many children in the area and later spending time caring for her grandchildren and helping with other friends of the family. Arlene’s love for her children, grandchildren, friends and neighbors was obvious in her youthful pursuit of fun. She will live on through our memories of tobogganing, trips to the park and playing enthusiastically outside.
Arlene went back to school as an adult and obtained her GED and at age 58 she received her certification as a personal care worker and continued her selfless legacy of being there for others.
Cremation has taken place. A visitation will be held Friday, Jan. 2nd from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at SW Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 3rd at 12 p.m. at the funeral home chapel with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
