Ronald Andrews

Ronald (Ron) Edward Andrews of Moose Jaw, Sask. passed away quietly on Dec. 28, 2014 at the age of 87, from complications related to seasonal influenza. Ron was born May 7, 1927 in Liverpool, England and immigrated to Canada with his new wife Valerie (nee Greenhalgh) in May 1951. He enthusiastically participated in many local sports activities such as soccer, hockey, table tennis, skiing and tennis. Varied interests and talents led him to membership in the Moose Jaw Kennel Club, Natural History Society and appointment as founding president of the Moose Jaw Humane Society, at the request of Mayor Scoop Lewry. An avid soccer player, he joined the Moose Jaw Wanderers Soccer Club and through volunteer coaching in the public schools was asked to share his skills to introduce soccer to the phys.ed. curriculum. This positive experience led him to pursue a second career in education and he received his B.Ed from the University of Saskatchewan in 1973. For 25 years he taught junior high in Moose Jaw at Empire, King Edward, Queen Elizabeth, and Palliser Heights schools. He particularly enjoyed being involved in the creation of a new outdoor education curriculum; taking his students on many field trips around Saskatchewan. A long time member of St. John’s Anglican Church, his service in numerous positions made a significant contribution to the ministry of the Parish. In his active retirement years Ron bought land south of Moose Jaw and built a “cabin in a hill” as a labor of love and affection for his wife. They called it Brynhafod, and spent many wonderful years there creating, enjoying and sharing their little piece of heaven with friends and family. An avid outdoor enthusiast and naturalist, Ron enjoyed camping, canoeing, backpacking and birdwatching throughout Saskatchewan and the Rockies. As long time members of Nature Moose Jaw and supporters of Wakamow Valley, Ron and Val enjoyed many happy hours on the trails birdwatching and sharing their knowledge with others. Ron is survived by his wife of 65 years Valerie, four of their five children: Carol (Don) Silver, Tim Andrews DVM, Jeff (Gisela) Andrews, Jill Andrews, 13 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, his younger brother Eric of Caerwys, Wales, and numerous nieces and nephews in England. He is predeceased by his parents, older brother Henry Joseph, and a son; Neil Lewis Andrews (1994). The Anglican Funeral Service (BCP) will be held at Parkview Funeral Chapel on Friday, January 2, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will take place at a later date.
