It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Edith Cavelle Campbell on Jan. 2, 2015, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital surrounded by her family.
Born in Buffalo, NY on April 27, 1923, she was a daughter of the late Herbert and Elizabeth (Nelson) Webb of Sydney. Edith’s entrance into the world wasn’t easy as her mother went into labour while visiting relatives in the U.S. Premature and placed in an incubator, she was a very sick baby but she made it through. Luck continued to follow Edith; while visiting relatives in Scotland, she almost drowned by the seaside but was saved by a relative. In 1939 she was on one of the last ships to leave England as war was declared; she recalled having to keep the curtains drawn in the cabins, nor was anyone allowed to smoke on deck. Mom worked at Moraff’s Yarns & Crafts in Whitney Pier, trained to be a hairdresser, and wanted to train to be a nurse, but as they say “life happens” so she married and started a family. Mom was a beautiful, smart, caring and compassionate woman who put the needs of her family above her own and no truer friend you could have. She was a great cook and baker, loved to read and knit, and always loved her mystery shows.
Edith is survived by daughters, Elizabeth Gerrard, Lr Sackville; Beverly (Gerald) Smith, Kitchener; Vera MacDonald, Sydney; Lindell (Peter) Kennedy, Elmsdale; sons, John (Debra), Kitchener; Herb, Halifax; Daren (Patricia), Sydney; brothers-in-law, John, Archie (Patricia) Campbell, Dutch Brook.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Charles, son Charles in infancy, brother Dave Webb, sister Vera Iesnor.
A thank you goes to Patricia Poirier, mom’s longtime companion and caregiver who helped mom through her many health issues these recent years and kept Mom looking fantastic. Thank you to the caring staff of 3A and the Palliative care unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
As per Edith’s request, cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. A family memorial service may be help at a later date.
In Edith’s memory, donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital or the charity of your choosing.
Arrangements are entrusted to S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home.
