Marie Sutherland

SUTHERLAND, MARIE HASTINGS (McCAIN) - It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Marie Hastings McCain Sutherland on Sunday, January 4th. Born in August of 1919, she was the eldest child of the late Andrew and Laura McCain. She attended public school in Florenceville, NB and graduated from Mount Allison University in 1940 with a certificate in Home Economics. She was married to her childhood sweetheart Dr. Jed B. Sutherland, her devoted husband of 54 years, until his death in June 1997. She is survived by her children Andrew (Woodstock), Lloyd (Calgary) and Heather (Halifax); her grandchildren Tyler, Lindsay and Darren; and countless nieces and nephews, and their children. She was predeceased by her siblings Andrew, Robert, Eleanor, Harrison and Wallace. Described by her husband as a professional volunteer, her kindness and compassion for community service such as Girl Guide of Canada, the school board, and church committees made her an influential role model for her entire family. Her hobbies included quilting, bridge, needlepoint and baking. She took pride in her crafts and those close to her have personal keepsakes to cherish forever. She loved nothing more than spending the summer extending her famous hospitality to the entire family and friends at Davidson Lake. A devout Anglican, Marie always put her family first, and memories of her compassion, hospitality and love for all will forever be cherished.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted Scott’s Funeral Home in Woodstock, NB with visitation on Wednesday, January 7th from 2 to 4pm and 7 to 9 pm.
